And he gets this tweet back.

Why bother sending that message to Russo? As another person who responded to this guy said, Russo writes for the Wild. If this is coming from a Devils' fan, then apparently he DOES still care.

Russo threw this back at him.
We're missing the bigger picture - Russo is writing at the Strib for the next 13 years. Also the Strib will exist in some form 13 years down the line! I hope he gets better privileges with that deal like access to Sid Hartman's food stash and use of the corporate jet for coffee excursions.

Maybe Sid will bequeath his tape recorder to Russo

Sure hope Parise and Suter can both play out their full contracts. That Cap Recapture looks like it will kill us(baring changes in the next CBA in 8 to 10 years). If they retire with three years left, each would carry a 6.3 million dollar cap hit for those final three years.

Granted who knows where the cap will be at that point, and maybe its a non issue but still could hurt.

I thought they had front loaded contracts? Is that not grandfathered in to the new CBA?

They do have front loaded contracts, according to Pierre Lebrun(amongst other sources) they included a clause to punish teams that have long term front loaded(or back diving contracts). So contracts like Kovalachuck, Luongo, Parise and Suter. This is how Lebrun explains it.

Quote:
To wit: letís say the Canucks trade Luongo soon. Luongo has played two years of his 12-year contract, the Canucks paying him $16.716 million in salary but only absorbing a $5.33 million cap hit each year. Thatís a cap savings of $6.056 million over two years so far for Vancouver. Under this new rule, should the Canucks trade him now and he retires with three years left on his contract, Vancouver would be charged that $6.056 million in cap savings over the final three years left on his deal from 2019 to 2022. However, letís say for argumentís sake Luongo gets traded to Toronto, the Maple Leafs also would be subject to cap penalties if Luongo retires before the end of his deal.

To wit, part 2: If Luongo were to play the next seven years of his deal in Toronto before retiring, the Leafs would be paying him $43.666 million in salary but only counting $37.31 million against the cap over those seven years, a cap savings of $6.356 million. So if Luongo retires with three years left on his deal (because his salary falls to $1.618 million in the 10th year and then $1 million in the last two years of the deal), the Leafs would get charged that $6.356 million on their cap spread evenly over the remaining three years of his deal.
So, by my math. If Parise and Suter retire at Year 10 of their contracts when they are 37, the Wild will have benefited 19 Million dollars in cap space due to the back diving. That money would be split up over the remainder of the deal as a cap hit. 6.3 a year, each.

Assuming the cap continues to increase (and there is no reason not to assume that) $6.3 million won't be as big of a constraint as some make it out to be 7-10 years from now.

I don't care about my health as much as I should a decade down the line; hard to be bothered to care how an NHL franchise handles it's contracts in that time frame.

i think Suter will play his deal out and so will parise.

Parise plays a two way game, so once his scoring goes he can still be a 3rd liner, expensive one at that but still a 3rd liner who can be a very solid vet.

Dman can play late into their years and be effective, this is assuming that we are still here in 13 years

12.6 sure would still be a constraint if they both retire.

They sign together and retire together. Wouldn't that be cute? Either way, I can't see them staying with this club for the entire contract. The average shelf life for a player on a team can be short. Staying in one place for 10 years or more is pretty rare these days.

What is the NMC/NTC like on their contracts? I'm assuming a full NMC for at least the first few years but I find it hard to believe they would have one for the entire contract length.

Pretty sure there's a mutual opt out clause after year 8.
