I was in the army stationed at Ft. Gordon, Ga, far away from any inkling of hockey but I got ESPN2 and that's all that mattered. I was a friend's house getting blasted and I saw Duschene score with 5 mins to go. I was so elated and when I came back to my barracks everyone knew I was a Sens fan and we had a little mock-party as I went nuts shouting and cheering (some people were trying to sleep actually) and then I got escorted by my friends back to my room.
The rest of the night is really a blurr but I had a double room to myself and I was just kinda moseying on into my room (if you saw the configuration you'd understand) and then I turned around and there was Sherri Lindt, a chick I had flirted with while working ceremonial detail and possibly the hottest mix of asian and south amerikan I had ever seen in my life. She was married, but like most young couples in the military all you heard of was that he was a jerk. I was really blitzed so I had absolutely no idea what I was doing - I didn't even have sex before. I still remember she had a nervous look on her face, probably not sure if I'd buy into this because I don't think I ever seemed like a playah.
But hey, it was Steve Duschene night and I figured I'd do what Steve would do and I wanted to put that puck in the net! Unfortunately I was so drunk I really couldn't get anything going and I think it was extremely disappointing for her. I don't know if it's typical for guys to be rock hard after intoxication but it certainly never worked for me and this was no exception.
I don't really know what was going through my mind but a few days later I saw her alone outside my building and I inadvertently brushed her off. She had a troubled look on her face but I was too stupid to realise it at the time. I think this is her but I've never pm'd her: http://www.facebook.com/sherri.lind.5
In any event I got to see Duschene score, which got the Sens into the playoffs and I began an annual ritual of breaking my hockeysticks and eventually making a hockey stick table.

I seem to remember us having a tough time signing Phillips after he was drafted, and I think there was the possibility of him re-entering the draft. Not 100% sure though.
Does anyone recall how much money we gave Daigle on his first contract?

Five years, $12.25 million total.

So, because of that they decided to change the entry level contracts? That is a lot of money and term to give a player who hasn't yet played an NHL game.
Hey thanks! Yesterday I was browsing the FB of some chick I remembered from high school (she was upper crust - I was just pie-pan grease) and seeing all the friends she had from high school and it was just interesting to see how a lot of people turned out. It was rather depressing.
But that's why I need Sens hockey to get my mind off that stuff

Berard refused to sign here because he felt we were a bottom feeder; it was also the year Yashin held out on his contract.
The Sens flipped him in a three way trade with the Islanders and Leafs in January of 96 (half a year after he was drafted). I believe it was Berard, Don Beaupre, and Marty Straka to the Islanders from Ottawa, who traded Beaupre and Kirk Muller to the Leafs for Damian Rhodes and Ken Belanger. Rhodes and Redden then became the return for Ottawa.
I was at the game that Duchesne scored the playoff making goal.
I remember Ottawa was buzzing all over the Sabres for pretty much the whole game, then close to the end Duchesne half whiffed on that point shot and of course Hasek was expecting a blast. First offspeed slapshot goal I ever saw.

I just watched it on YouTube...funny how I remember it is quite a bit different than the actual play.
Still only got a piece of it, but I seem to remember him being much further away from the net.
Maybe the difference between seeing it live and watching it on tv?
1995-96:
- Daniel Alfredsson's rookie season. I credit Alfie with making me a Sens fan. As a rookie he was far and away our best player that season. That was the year of Yashin's first big holdout, and Daigle and Bonk were struggling. But Alfredsson was the silver lining of the season. His appearance was like a beacon of light. And I used to wear #11 so I was immediately a big fan.
- Bringing in Gauthier and Martin was a huge change. Between their arrival, the opening of the Palladium, the trade for Damian Rhodes, Alfredsson's rookie year and Yashin's new contract, there was real optimism surrounding the team for the first time in years, even though they finished dead last yet again.
1996-97
- The playoff drive. I cut out the newspaper articles from all the late season wins. Tom Chorske and the Buddha. Ron Tugnutt giving us reliable goaltending for once. Two emerging elite offensive talents in Yashin and Alfredsson. The gritty leadership of Randy Cunneyworth. Andy Dackell's rookie season - he became one of my favourite players. Lance Pitlick becoming a popular unsung hero on defense - I think the Citizen ran a feature on him. Steve Duchesne giving us elite offense from the blueline. Steve Duchesne getting us into the playoffs! Oh babee! Wade Redden's solid rookie season - we had the makings of a future #1 defenseman. The Rhodes-Tugnutt tandem. The Demitra trade - ugh what a mistake! The arrival of Sergei Zholtok - who couldn't love this guy. Steve bloody Shields shutting us down in the playoffs. Derek Plante and Tugnutt's weak glove hand. Oh the humanity.
1997-98
-The emergence of Shawn McEachern. Magnus Arvedson giving us an overage Swedish rookie for the 3rd straight year. The Daigle trade and excitement for Prospal. Yashin's only good playoff. Winning our first playoff round with Blur blaring over the speakers. The "WOO HOO ROUND TWO" posters that came free in the Ottawa Citizen - I had one up on my wall. Rhodes tended goal for our franchise's first playoff win, and the debates between Rhodes and Tugnutt boosters continued. To be honest, I barely remember the loss to Washington.
1998-99
- Yashin's career season and NAC donation. The man was unstoppable - until the playoffs. Andreas Johansson was a pleasant surprise. Arvedson emerging as an elite two-way forward with an insane +33 and a Selke nom. Sami Salo and Marian Hossa as promising rookies. Radek Bonk starting to turn the corner? Alfie injured and invisible. Devastating playoff disappointment followed by the Yashin NAC and contract holdout scandals in the off-season. The guy went from toast of the town to Satan spawn over the course of a few months.

That was a great summary!
As long as it's been, and as much as they've both proved themselves mortal since then, I still credit Gauthier and Martin for finally turning this team around.

Easy there......Martin and Marshall Johnston turned this team around. Where would we be today if we didn't have Spezza? What would our success look like had we not enjoyed 4 years of Chara and molded him into the d-man he is today.
Johnston was also bold as hell, trading fav favourite Tugger for an established playoff experienced vet in Barasso who at the time seemed like a good fit to get the team over the hump.

Well, I say Gauthier because he was GM for the turnaround. He hired Martin, as I remember. Johnston turned the team into a contender, but I still say Gauthier was the one who turned the team from a perennial flop into a playoff team.

Yes! One of my first memories of the Sens. The first game hockey game I ever watched was one of the later games of the New Jersey series. I was completely hooked after that.
I was at the game that Duchesne scored the playoff making goal.

I was at that game too. That's when Scotiabank Place (Corel Centre at the time) was loud. I remember Galley talking on the Team 1200 a few years ago about how loud the arena was when the Sabres played the Senators in the '97 playoffs. He said it was so loud you could hardly hear yourself think. Now it's like being in a library when you go to a game.

To be fair, this year's playoff home games were pretty loud.
