Nashville matches Philly's offer sheet

Darren Dreger‏@DarrenDreger

"Breaking: Shea Weber agrees to offer sheet with Philadelphia. 14 years, upwards of $100 mil. Preds have 7 days to match. Wow!!"

Dumb move by Holmgren. The only chance they had of him hitting UFA was signing a one-year deal. Nashville easily matches this.

I was wondering how long it would take for it to pop up here after seeing on the trade board. Honestly, the biggest part of this story is that someone signed an offer sheet. I can't see why Nashville wouldn't match considering what they are already paying Rinne and what they likely offered Suter.

very interesting tweet that makes it sound like they won't match

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger

Nashville was working on a trade and its believed several deadlines passed before Flyers grew tired of waiting. Weber signed offer sheet.

Hilarious if it's 14 years and not above 100 million. Bad for us.

Have a belief that the Preds will take a deep breath and match it. Philly's GM just became public enemy number 1. First he deals players that just signed, now his fellow GMs will hate him, enjoy that island. Somebody will take a run at Giroux for this in his RFA year if an extension isn't hammered out.

inb4 "Holland has no balls to make moves like this, Holmgren does. That's why we need a new GM.

Weber is a top 2 defensemen but 14 years and 4 1sts is a lot to give up.

If NSH don't match Flyers are gonna have to rid a few players. It gets worse if the cap goes down.

I swear Holmgren does these things just to do em.

No he has tied his hands if they want him at this point. You think Nash has a hard time getting out of Cbus

I'm told a number of teams were in on a possible Shea Weber trade. If Preds don't match, they receive 4- 1st round picks as compensation.

Wow indeed. Wasn't expecting this to happen at all. Knew it could, but wasn't expecting it

Holmgren sure knows how to make splashes...

Good. Either Weber is out of our division or Nashville sinks so much money and term into him that they will struggle to put a half decent team around him.

I just added this on the Preds board:

I was thinking Weber would have waited but maybe after seeing what the NHL proposed for the new CBA (term limits, 10 yrs to UFA, no bonuses, no frontloading), his agent maybe convinced him he couldn't afford to wait until next year.

Also--- how can Poile choose not to match? He can get NHL players and picks and prospects for a signed Weber. He has to wait four successive seasons to use one ea of Philly's firsts? No thanks. Of course, I'm expecting an NMC, but if the Preds keep him, he may be willing to submit a list of teams. He doesn't seem to want to stay there anyway.

7.14 caphit ... Poile with match this everyday of the week and twice in Sundays. What a joke - Suter gets 7.5 for 13 years. ****ing unreal. Holmgrens a moron who just wrote up Nashvilles ideal contract for Weber. Poile must be smiling from ear to ear.

4 first rounders? Who cares - they be in the 22-30 range given how young/elite Philly is and odds are 1 or 2 will pan out and become full-time NHL'ers .... in 2-4 years!

Considering Philly apparently offered Suter over 100 mill - this is emabrrassing if Holmgren actually thought this would get it done.

If the deal has massive signing bonuses in the first two years, Preds would have to pay both those bonuses even if they trade him as soon as possible right? That would be very costly for one year of service.

If I am the Preds I match this tonight. Help prove all the talk they aren't afraid to spend money and send an annoyed message to the Flyers.

By the way before somebody else says it I think they would have matched any offer we sent them. I still think they match the Flyers but there isn't the additional pressure. No way can Holland offer this, regardless of his stance on doing this with RFA's and worrying about his relationships with other GMs.

Ya, they gave Rinne all that money and were prepared to go 100m on Suter and Weber >> Suter.

Only way Poile doesn't match it is if ownership tells him not too.

Holmgren doesn't seem to like the fact that Howson took over the role of the biggest asshat GM.

Either that or he believes Weber's agent that they cannot match big front loaded contracts. Problem is with Weber under contract Nashville can dump salary if that is what it takes to pull this off and all he can do is sit there with a stunned face.

I don't see any scenerio where Nashville doesn't match. I think Holmgren knows that too. Maybe Holmgren didn't want Weber traded to another Eastern team?

The fallout with GMs around the league should be pretty big. Especially since he did it to a pretty popular guy with other GMs.

Maybe Pittsburgh was one of the teams.

Probably told that he was out of the running for a trade, decided to use the system to ensure that no rivals got him. Dick move, sure, but smart I guess.
