A lot. Sharks aren't willing to rebuild and want a chance to win next season. Therefore since an immediate equal return for Thornton, to the Sharks needs philosophy and values, is impossible Thornton will not be moved. This is especially true with his NMC.

But to the Sharks organizations point of view the answer is very high

Well you have to think about the market. He's 33, so a team looking to acquire him would have to be a team that thinks they can be contenders within the next ~3 years or so and who also need a scoring centre.

-NYR (upgrade of Stepan, gives them two legitimate scoring lines)
-Wash (though they just traded for Ribeiro, so maybe not)
- St. Louis (gives them a legitimate PPG threat up front, Backes-Thornton looks way better than Backes-Berglund)
-Chicago (needs a 2nd line centre)
-Calgary (they're not actually contenders, but they like to act like they're in some window of contention, so you could probably trick them into doing it)
-Phoenix (needs a big name up front, though they're very much peripheral contenders even with Thornton)

That's about it in terms of teams that would be willing to get into a bidding war for him. I'm sure other teams (like Toronto, Winnipeg, etc) would love to have him to upgrade at the C position, but none of them look to be contenders in the next few years, and Thornton will be (or arguably already is) declining soon.

The argument doesn't really hold up. He completely reinvented himself and instead of being used in Sendinesque soft minutes he is shutting down top competition while leading the Sharks in scoring

He will not going to be traded. He is worth more to the Sharks than any possible return, which would probably not be a whole lot. A top 6 player + top4 defenseman + a midlevel prospect or a late 1st/2nd. Definitely not more than he was traded for.

His old apartment back and an 'A' on his shoulder. And a 3rd round pick.

He's worth Brad Stuart, Marco Sturm and Wayne Primeau.

Since Primeau has retired a package like Stuart, Sturm, and someone like Jeff Halpern would work.

I really hate when people say stuff like that. I guess people think it's cute, but it's gotten pretty old.

Thornton is worth a hell of a lot more than we traded for him. We got him in a very unique situation where we were the only team bidding.

This was the season in which Thornton really emerged as a premier two-way force in the NHL, finishing top ten among forwards in quality of competition league-wide while starting more shifts in his own end of the rink than the offensive zone and still clobbering the opposition he faced territorially and in terms of goal difference. When Thornton was on the ice 5v5 this season, the Sharks recorded 409 scoring chances to their opponents' 297, a ridiculous 58% chance percentage that was very likely among the best in the league.

I can't stress the rarity of Thornton's accomplishments this season enough. Since Gabe Desjardins, Vic Ferrari and co. began tracking advanced statistics with the advent of the NHL's real-time scoring system in 2007, no forward has posted a better Relative Corsi rating than Thornton while facing the quality of competition Jumbo did this season or greater. To put it in other words, no one in the last five years has had better even-strength results than Thornton playing minutes as tough as he did in 11-12.

Stop this madness.

I can't see Thornton declining for at least another 4 years. And he's signed for another 2. Trading him would signal the start of a retooling (think Philly rebuild on the fly).

Anyway to answer the question; I guess a combination of young forwards or prospects and/or picks (1sts and 2nds)

Leadership, size, skill...etc

Aside from his playoff performances, he would be worth at least a great prospect and a pick. #1 centers are harder to find than almost any other position.

Not sure what's worse, the offer, or having Richards above Thornton.
