Yes he does have the right to hold Weber against his will for the rest of his life (contract)

My thoughts, Nashville matches and will move him within the next 24months due to high salary

They would have to keep him at least a year if they match.

Contracts come off but players need to replace them. What happens to Hartnell after this season? Is he only going to make 4.2 next year? Wayne Simmonds? Kimmo? Pronger's contract isn't going anywhere.

I don't know but it doesn't matter the money he wants to spend if there is no cap space to do so.

Bwah? He's a RFA. By definition the team holds his rights. Confused.

Why do people keep saying this? He has to stay at least a year if it's matched. Maybe you meant after 24 months?

I take my fanhood out when reviewing stuff like this and here is what my mind tells me:

This is either a great move or a terribly stupid move. I like that Philly put themselves in the driver seat. That's what you do when you want a player. If trade talk wasn't going anywhere, you throw the pressure right back on Nashville and try to steal their player.

How this could be a terribly stupid move? Well... if Nashville matches then Philly is pretty much all but out of the running in 365 days IF Shea would want a trade to a contender. Not to mention, a few of their biggest competitors might be the perfect fit in terms of trade. Also, Nashville might want to keep Shea out of Philly since this move was made.

I love that Philly is in the lead right now, but this is going all-in early in the tournament with the best hand. Will it payoff and make Philly the chip leader going into Day 2? We will see. Could it back fire down the road? Sure. We just have to wait and see how it all plays out.

Kimmo's 6.3 cap hit is coming off the books next year. He most likely will be retiring. He said it himself when his contract is up he is done playing. The defense will be fine if they nab Weber. The only tricky part to this is resigning Hartnell or Simmonds.

Goodness, go back a few pages and look at the numbers. A bazillion dollars the first 4 years, $1M the last few. It's the *degree* of manipulation. A $110 MILLION dollar contract that pays $1M each of the last few years is very clear manipulation. 14 years and people already saying the player will retire before the last few even kick in. Again, totally legal at this point. Won't be for much longer so it was "wise" to use this circumventing loophole now.

He may have been offered a similar cap hit and term, we don't have the details to know whether or not he was getting 27M in year 1.

What weber's motivation was this may be his last chance at a mega deal like parise , suter and kovy. Who knows what restrictions the cba will have for contracts. Better to secure your finances now when you can. Im sure he is comfortable with philly or nash now that he is securing his financial future.
This. For Weber it was all about his last chance at one of these "mega deals".

Can Nashville trade his rights in the next week to a team and have them match?

The best part about this thread is all of the people who are so scared of this offer by the Flyers that they just trash them for any reason they can think of. "Lol Bryz sucks." "Watch what happens to your RFAs." "Homer's a disgrace," etc.

Want to know what happens to our RFAs? We lock them up before this can happen if they're worth it. And Homer didn't start this trend, he's done ONE deal that was cap circumvention. Blame all of the other GMs who did it, too. You don't handicap yourself out of morals, it's respectable Burke does it but it's really not helping now is it?

After paying a large part of it though? Doesn't make much sense. Either keep him or trade/let him go for picks now to Philly.

After they've made a 1-year $26M investment to a player? Yeah. That'll show'em.

I don't understand why some people are saying teams will target flyers RFA...why would other teams gms try to "get back at the flyers" for something that does not directly affect there organization at all. it seems like homer has a great relationship with a lot of the gms since he makes trades with just about anyone, so other than David Poile I'm not sure who homer is making enemies with here.
