If Kovalchuck doesn't show up, we'd get a high 3rd rounder.
Man, NJ really should've sacrificed that 1st rounder last year. If they get a top pick this year, they have a tough decision about getting rid of their pick at the 2013 draft or when they host the draft.

Worst case scenario for devils is they get a 10-13 pick this year they take it then bomb next year and have to forfeit a 1st overall followed by kovalchuk leaving for Russia
So they get ****ed over on the pick by a guy they bent over to appease
I just don't understand the people who are siding with Kovalchuk here....he has an obligation to his team...the team he signed a contract with. It's your job to play with the Devils...I don't care if you want to play in the KHL All Star game...or finish your season there...it's your freaking obligation as an employee to honor the contract you signed with your current team...just ridiculous.
Edit: Obviously not speaking to anyone on this board...just have seen people on twitter who say they understand where he's coming from.

He'll no doubt be back with the Devils. What would bother me more than anything (if I was a Devils' fan) are the statements that he's making about how he would like to stay in Russia, but has a "contractual" obligation that would be tough to break. It'd be tough to watch him step out on the ice in your team jersey when he's given the impression that he'd like to be somewhere else. It doesn't exactly scream "team player." You'd have to question whether or not he's giving it his all, or whether he's spending his free time trying to find a way out. And it sounds like one of his teammates in New Jersey isn't thrilled about him staying back to play in the All-Star game and not being back in time for the first day of training camp. For a guy who was supposedly going to be their new captain, he could be starting the abbreviated season by disrespecting his teammates.
Kovalchuk has no obligation to return because there's no CBA in place. He wants to play in the KHL All Star Game (along with Datsyuk). When the CBA is signed he would be obligated to return.
From what I've read, he's frustrated with the lockout and doesn't want to bail on his current team as they're trying to make the playoffs. Of course he's still dead wrong. Maybe heart in the right place, but he's got an NHL contract.
I believe if he bails on his contract, he forfeits over $80M. I don't think he's that dumb.
I'm just as guilty as anyone when it comes to lambasting Kovy's attitude and comments recently, but Katie Baker's latest makes you think twice about criticizing Eastern Bloc players who don't always excel in North America.
