He has incentive to sign now, with the CBA looming.

Same reaction when we decided to keep our guys instead of Scott Neidermayer...sometimes it just makes sense to be bold if you can.

I'm not saying no one good is ever drafted late in the first. I am, however, going by probability. The numbers will show that very few players (percentage-wise) drafted in the last 5 or 10 picks of round 1 become big-impact players. So statistically there is a slim chance of finding a stud.

awww man.... I just wrote up a huge post, exhaustively researched, about the 2003 draft and the next four drafts.

The last line I remember. The summary was, in the 5 drafts from 2003 - 2007:

There was a 6.6% chance of choosing an all star from picks 25-30.
There was a 3.3% chance of picking an all star in the second round.

If anything is to be learned, it's that every available bit of money should be poured into the scouting department. It's a lot easier to retain top players than sign them to lifetime contracts. Heck, 29 other teams could have drafted Shea Weber.

Yandle is just as much of a pipe dream. He's only 26 - he'd be an amazing addition.

I have no idea why Phoenix would deal Yandle. Sometimes I think GMs just make trades for the sake of making trades. That's what it looked like with NASH and CBJ before it came out that Nash wanted to be dealt.

Thats the only logical answer, Either Yandle wants out, or the team doesn't want the burden of that 20+ million with the uncertainty in Glendale. No GM is stupid enough to trade a 26 year old all star for the sake of a trade, other than maybe Milbury.

Hopefully for their sake (I guess...) that's the case. Because if Phx trades Yandle for no reason, that would be pretty hard to justify.

There's also the possibility that he returns a kings ransom that makes it stupid not to trade the player, but that doesn't really tend to happen.

Very rarely does the "King's ransom" turn out to be worthwhile. Only when one of the prospects actually surpases the "proven" player does that turn out to be true...for example:

-Yashin for Spezza + Chara + Pick (in this case both Spezza and Chara turned out to be better than Yashin)

-Lindros for Forsberg+++++++ (in this case Forsberg turned out to be better than Lindros)

-Pederson for Neely + pick (in this case Neely turned out better than Pederson)

In most other cases, the team getting the prospect loses the trade because the guys they got never became as good as the guy given up. Even when the prospects turn out well to ok, for exmample:

-Roy (HHOF) for Thibeault (all-star) + Rucinsky (25g two-way guy) + Kovalenko (30 goal powerforward).

-Hossa (all-star) for Armstrong (20G PWF) + Christiensen (bottom 6 fwd) + Esposito (bust)

So the rumor I heard today was that the Canucks were contemplating a 1 year offer sheet to Shea Webber that was something along the lines of 1M in salary and 13M in signing bonus, but even that, like every other scenario they contemplated would be matched by Nashville (in their opinion)

I guess two solid years of unwarranted Luongo scrutiny wasn't enough? Yeah....riiiiight.

Gillis already addressed this. They wanted to give him the 1 year, but Weber wanted long term security

That makes sense. I didn't get a chance to listen to his discussion on the team yesterday in it's entirety but that explains it.

Anybody who seriously thought we were gonna get Weber? Delusional, stupid, maybe both. But let's not let it end here! Guys, I heard Weber is furious at Nashville matching, now under the rules for offer-sheet matching, Nashville can't trade him for a year, but once that year is up I heard he totally wants to force a trade to the Canucks, Nash-style! What do you think it'd take?
