wow, so I guess Todd Elik lives in Regina now, and has become somewhat of a business associate of my brother and there's a good chance we might be able to get him to play a few games with our level "D" adult safe league team.

I think I'm gonna bring him in and say "this is Todd" and no one will know who he is, then there will be grumblings about icetime, etc, until they see him dangle.

or, maybe at 46 he's not that good. I am guessing he is, though.

There used to be these really cool mini-writeups of each game of the ATD Finals. I'd love to see us go back to them. http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/sh...6&postcount=70

I tried doing writeups of the series I collected votes for in 2011 (starting in the first round). But it ended up with GMs *****ing at me that I was taking too long to post the results, so I stopped.

Maybe it could be done for final series.

Nothing will ever beat the write-up done for the finals of the Leaf Chat ATD2.....

Game 6, The Musical!

Enter Seventies Lord, wearing a house coat and bunny slippers. He sits on a chair and smokes a pipe.

70slord: It was only a year past, I went to a board,
a place where leafs fans like me, seventieslord
would talk of their heroes, and plan their parade
but several smart cookies saw through this charade!
The present they saw was a sore sight to see
so I got them talking about history!
I'm sure you agree, it's a credit to me,
that now we're a part of the
AAAAAAAA TTTTTTTTTTT DDDDDD!
In the first ATD, with my HFBoards know how
I built a team, that I think most would allow
was the best overall, the pride of Regina
On April 1st I drafted a player with a......long history of international achievements for Canada.
With 20 teams now, it's been brought up a peg, I see
and this time, no one drafted Manny Legace
Of these 20 teams, only two remain,
they are about to play their 6th game!
We'll give you that game, at whatever the cost
but first, let's hear from the GMs that lost!
Chuck Norris: My forwards were soft!
Manda: My defense all looked lost!
Gipper: Picking Malkin crippled my team!
Loxcane: All my stars were on defense!
Leafyy: Dressing Draper made no sense!
Vin: Couldn't score on St. Patrick, it seems!
SOW: Too many times on the reach list!
Joyzee: Too many picks missed!
Armster: Got burned trading for number one!
Sakic91: Brodeur's overrated!
HHH: A first round matchup we hated!
Jarek: After that series, my team was done!
Can Opener: Besides center, my team's toast!
Commie Ninja: Hull hates playing Provost!
TKabs: I guess Schmidt's not God!
TI: The system was flawed!
Detox: Yes, arguing with Dreakmur is paaaaaaaaaain
Dreakmur: I'm glad to be here in the ATD final!
Spinner: And I'm glad to be back again!
70slord: So strap on your helmets, and hold on to your sticks,
Spinner leads 3-2, and we're set for game six!

Enter players from both teams in full gear.
Enter Josef Kompalla, carrying the puck

Josef Kompalla: And now to begin, you boys best play nice!
No hits from behind, keep your sticks on the ice!
Mikita: And why in the effing, hell is he reffing?
Firsov: Do not worry comrade, he doesn't think I'm bad!
Kompalla: Alright now, good luck, I'm dropping the puck!
Lach: The faceoff, I won it
Pilote: He's coming, get on it!
Mantha: Never fear, I delivered a hit!
Pilote: Well there goes an outlet pass,
to the Bomber, he skates fast
Conacher: I took the first shot on net!
Bower: You can't score that easy!
Hall: I'm feeling real queasy
I think I might run to the john.
H. Pulford: You already went there.
Hall: Alright, your point's fair
all my stomach contents are gone.
But here come the Chiefs, this attack won't be brief
But I promise you boys, I'll stand tall!
I'm the one and only, the true "Mr. Goalie"
All Spartans: Yes Heeeeeeee's Glennnnnnnn Halllllllllllll!

enter Seventieslord

70slord: And so went the first, neither team looking worse
it seems like a goaltending battle
but all same, let's get back to the game, enough of hearing my prattle!
Now where did we leave off when we saw the curtains fall?
Dreakmur: I believe we were talking about Mr. Goalie, Glenn Hall.

sound of needle scratching a record

Howe: Mr. Goalie you say? I'll do you one better
I'm Mr. Hockey, that's my name to the letter!
Not Mr. Forward, or Mr. Right Wing
I'm Mr. Hockey, that's right, the whole thing!
And why do they give me this prestigious title?
Because I do everything, my presence is vital!
I throw hits! (thump!)
I work corners! (smack!)
I send passes! (Hey Gordie!)
I score goals!
Foster Hewitt: He shoots, he scores, and the crowd goes insane!
Adams: Yes, Gordie's the best, to see it is plain!
It's only one goal, that's a credit to Hall,
but we're up 1-0, hey thanks China Wall!
Bower: You said my name sir, a name that is apt,
a reflection of all of the pucks that I've trapped
playing hockey, with no Mongolians to keep out...
Dave Bidini: Have you read my book? That's what it's about!

Everyone laughs. Dave Bidini leaves awkwardly, as the pit band plays "The Ballad Of Wendel Clark"

70slord: One more frame to go, and I'd like to get crackin'
but the Hot Stove is on, god damn that Al Strachan!

Mikita: Our season's on the line, we must score
we must find a way to break down the China Wall
Fetisov: Victory's within our grasp, we must defend
we must fina a way to stooooop them alllllllllll
Mikita: I'll fire a shot!
Conacher: And a shot!
Firsov: And a shot!
Cook: And a shot!
Bower: But fools, I'll stop them all!
I'll make saves on most, get help from the post
while our shot-blockers answer the call!
Patrick: From start to the end, the play's in their end
I'm sure that my players will score!
Yes, that Johnny Bower's a tower of Bower, but how long will he shut us out for?
Mikita: the clock's winding down, let's take this to town!
Hall: And I'll go for an extra man!
Fetisov: I'm sure Jolly Jack, we'll be on my back,
taking penalties wasn't the plan.
Leetch: It's a 6 on 4, a chance now to score!
Pilote: I'll try to set Conacher up!
Bower: I'll kick out a toe, and whaddya know, it's a stop.
Gilmour: I'll grab the rebound, and fire it down
as far away as it can get
but where did it go?
Lo and behold
it went into the empty net
the game, it is done, it seems we have won!
It seems that we're going to be
The champions
Johnny Bower: The Champions!
Gordie Howe: The Champions of the ATD!
All Chiefs: The Champions, the champions, of the ATD
ooooooooof theeeeeee AAAAAAA TTTTTTT DDDDDDDDD

All exit, and return for a curtain call, as pit band play "the Hockey song" Dreakmur and Spinner are the last to take their bow, and are given a standing ovation.

That was brilliant. I believe it was Johnny Engine (formerly Communist Ninja) who did it, right? This place needs more of him. A lot more.

He's in a band so I imagine writing lyrics like this comes easy to him. I mean, I consider myself to be pretty good at it, yet I could slow clap at this one for hours.

I only regret how limited it is in its appeal. Only ATDers would really get it at all, and specifically people from that ATD would be the only ones to get all the inside jokes. Furthermore, you have to at least know a little about musicals.

I can appreciate it all day - but I wish I could show it to my brother, or my wife!

That is a total mess. There is literally nothing redeeming about it besides campiness, and even that is worn pretty thin.

I realize goalies are only as good as the players around them and Fantasy sports are fantasy, not real. If you ranked the active NHL goalies based on current skills, not career, how close to Yahoo's fantasy goalie rankings do you think your rankings would be? Do you see any problems with their rankings?

Henrik Lundqvist
(NYR - G)
Jonathan Quick
(LA - G)
Pekka Rinne
(Nsh - G)
Jimmy Howard
(Det - G)

Howard? Really?

Anyway, I've been looking at the NHL team map today and thought how much better would it look if the league added Quebec and Seattle.

Northwest: Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Seattle
Pacific: San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Phoenix
Southern: Dallas, Colorado, St. Louis, Nashville
Great Lakes: Minnesota, Chicago, Winnipeg, Detroit

Northeast: Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec
Atlantic: Boston, NY Rangers, NY Islanders, New Jersey
Southeast: Carolina, Washington, Tampa Bay, Florida
Eastern: Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Columbus, Buffalo

Sure the divisions might looks nice, but is adding 2 more teams really a good idea economically for the league? I'd much rather see them move existing teams (I'd like to see them contract a couple teams even more, but that's not gonna happen).

Add teams to Quebec City, Houston, and either Seattle or Portland. 2 via expansion, 1 from moving Phoenix.

This obviously assumes those cities all build suitable arenas.

Here's 1 guy's Top 25 Under 25. I take it with a grain of salt, because his original list did not include Tavares and this one does not include Gabriel Landeskog, Ryan McDonough, or Oliver Ekman-Larsson. What do you guys think of his list?

"Here is Greenberg's Top 25 Under 25 (ESPN Insider), with No. 1 Mr. Toews repeating in that spot:

1. C Jonathan Toews, Chicago Blackhawks, 24
2. C Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay Lightning, 22
3. C Logan Couture, San Jose Sharks, 23
4. C Jordan Staal, Carolina Hurricanes, 24
5. C John Tavares, New York Islanders, 22
6. RW Patrick Kane, Chicago Blackhawks, 24
7. LW Taylor Hall, Edmonton Oilers, 21
8. D Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Kings,
9. D Erik Karlsson, Ottawa Senators, 22
10. LW Brad Marchand, Boston Bruins, 24

12. C Tyler Seguin, Boston Bruins, 21
13. LW Jamie Benn, Dallas Stars, 23

Depends what you're picking. If you're picking an actual team that you want to play a game with, it's pretty bad. If it's just an all-star kind of team, then it's alright.

Bobby Ryan, Ryan McDonaugh, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and Tuukka Rask are the big ones missing from the list.

If you're playing in an actual game, there's no way you can leave Brandon Sutter or Ryan O'Reilly off the team. Even a guy like Niklas Hjalmarsson would be a must-have!

Edit:
I guess Bobby Ryan and Tuukka rask turned 25 already.... so here is my team....

Jamie Benn – Jonathan Toews – Steven Stamkos
John Tavares - Jordan Staal – Evander Kane
Logan Couture – Ryan O’Reilly – Tyler Seguin
Milan Lucic – Brandon Sutter – Wayne Simmonds

Alex Pietrangelo – Drew Doughty
Ryan McDonough – Erik Karlsson
Oliver Ekman-Larsson – Kevin Shattenkirk

Anders Lindback
Steve Mason

Yeah, Couture is too high at #3. Tavares should probably be in that spot, followed by Kane, Doughty, Pietrangelo, Karlsson and Staal in whatever order you prefer.

Alright, you know the drill. 7 game series, who wins, Team A or Team B?

Tarasov

Ovechkin – Maltsev – S Makarov
Kovalchuk – Malkin – Balderis
A Yakushev – Larionov – Mikhailov
Alexandrov – Starshinov - Loktev

Kasatonov – Lutchenko
Zubov – Ragulin
Gonchar – Davydov

Tretiak
Myshkin

Spares: Ivanov, Shadrin, Kuzkin, B Mayorov

VS

Tikhonov

Kharlamov - V Petrov - P Bure
Firsov - S Fedorov - Mogilny
Krutov - Datsyuk - Khomutov
Bobrov - A Yashin - S Kozlov

Fetisov - Konstantinov
Vasiliev - Sologubov
A Markov - Ozolinsh

Konovalenko
Khabibulin

Spares: Kamensky, Bykov, Kovalev, Kasparaitis

this one's much closer than the ones I usually post, so take your time. my protege is clearly learning.

Team 1 wins because of the massive advantage in goal. Honestly, given a 2 team draft of all Russian players, Tretiak should be the first pick because the other goalies just aren't nearly as good.

Also, Tikhonov would likely banish Pavel Bure to Siberia. On the other hand, Balderis and Kovalchuk are going to have trouble hogging the puck at the same time.

Was Nabokov not eligible as he's technically not Russian (even though he plays for them internationally)?

I don't want to derail the new topic at hand. But I'm still trying to figure this all out...

What gets made of an Aleksey Morozov type? Bleh NHL career, showed the potential but never could find the consistency though. Always left you wanting more. Then he goes over to the KHL - the 2nd best league in the world - and is rather dominant.

- 2006: RSL MVP/Champion - Most goals
- 2007: RSL Most goals/points - Best forward at World Championships
- 2008: Continental Cup champ/Worlds champ
- 2009: KHL 1st team all-star/playoff MVP
- 2010: KHL all-star/champion
- 2011: KHL all-star

Scoring finishes are good too just eyeballing it. So he's a top player for at least a handful of years (pretty much all the years that he could have been) in the second best league and has been meaningful in international competition...and players like Kirill Koltsov, who never bothered much with the North American game, or Kevin Dallman, who did, but sucked at it...two of the better KHL d-men in the last few years...

Obviously, we're not giving Morozov the same treatment has Kharlamov for obvious reasons...but what happens? Do you adjust for the fact that there's 30 x 23 NHL roster spots and go, 'welp, they couldn't crack any of these...to hell with'em' - even though, that's not really true (Radulov)...or do we give them the benefit like a Seth Martin, where you go, "he didn't want to leave his club because it just didn't make sense for him...it's not that he wasn't wanted...he didn't want them"

This KHL enterprise is growing international, so certainly some attention must be paid. Starting today, a Dominik Hasek regenerative clone starts his career in the KHL...plays for 10 years: best goalkeeper 5x, KHL MVP 3x, stats galore, a few championships, a number of gold medals at the WCs, a couple silvers at the Olympics, a couple of Best Goaltenders in these int'l competitions...retires at age 31 because he doesn't want to play anymore, never wanted to play in the NHL (though they wanted him) and that's that...ATD level 'tender?

It's becoming a fairly realistic possibility that an elite player will grow up and remain in the KHL. Even if we discount Morozov-types by saying, 'well, he couldn't really hack it in the NHL...' - I'm still curious to know what happens...what's the book say?
