It's never too early to prepare:

Dear Santa,

All I want for Christmas this year is for these teams (in the new format) to earn the automatic berths as top-3 in their division for the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs:

Western Conference

Pacific Division: Vancouver, San Jose, Edmonton

Mid-West Division: Nashville, Winnipeg, and..., and,... why not Minnesota

Eastern Conference

Central Division: Montreal, Buffalo, Ottawa

Atlantic Division: Washington, Philadelphia, N.Y. Rangers

Sincerely,
VI

P.S. A wildcard berth is okay too
.

P.S.2. If you can't do all of that, just tank Pittsburgh, L.A., N.J. and Chicago. Don't bother with T.O., they suck.

It feels like (nearly) everything went right for the Gillis regime in Vancouver up to Game 2 of the Finals and everything after has gone wrong.

I just need to vent and I don't get angry at hockey very often

He hasn't done himself any favours, there have been some terrib;e transactions and the team is back to the Sedins and no one else again.

That's part of what I'm saying - most of moves before 2011's off-season worked and most since then have not worked out

I knew they wouldn't ****ing work right when they happened too, namely signing Sturm and trading Hodgson for Kassian.

"Star Wars" original cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill are in talks to join the next installment of the science-fiction franchise, a person with knowledge of plans for the new film told Reuters on Thursday.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said lawyers had the contracts for all three actors and that an announcement would be made soon. Representatives for Ford, who played Han Solo in the first three films, declined to comment. Reuters was unable to reach representatives for Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker from 1977 to 1983.

Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the first "Star Wars" trilogy, got the rumor mills buzzing this week after saying she would reprise her role in the new film, due in theaters in 2015, in an interview with U.S. magazine Palm Beach Illustrated.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/...ntent=My+Yahoo I hope they're just gonna talk, because in terms of their ability to do action/adventure stunt work these actors are Yoda's age. Harrison Ford is 70. The only way he can shoot first is with Viagra!

someone help me to understand this realignment. Essentially, 8 of 14 make it on one side, and 8 of 16 on the other side? How is this fair?

It certainly isn't equal. There's a 7% greater chance to make the playoffs out West.

Of course, if the Coyotes move to Quebec in the offseason then they can re-align things accordingly before long.

Under the conception of fairness is equality with inequality needing justification, the alignment certainly looks unfair. Why the heck not have a division of 8 and a division of 7 in each conference?

Perhaps it's a short term move with unpublicized longterm plans (like adding two more teams out West in expansion in the near future: Seattle! Houston!).

just take it as a proof that people running the league aren't as smart as one would hope.

This has to be set up with a Phoenix conference switch in mind. They accept the small distortion in one season to avoid having to shuffle multiple teams in and out of divisions/conferences two times, which would be terribly annoying. I think it's the right move provided they fix the situation in this offseason.

Wouldn't you put more teams in the West if you were anticipating a Phoenix move?

Maybe they're throwing Detroit a bone for a year or two until Phoenix moves and they have to go back west anyway?

And what's the deal with the two Florida teams - are they counting on snowbirds from Canada to increase attendance or does the NHL just not care about them?

There is talks about sending the Devils to the midwest divison

Edit: I think the reasoning with the Florida teams is to have Red Wings vs. Yzermans Tampa. Red Wings used to be a attendance booster.

Nobody cares about the Panthers tho...

Teams are going to have all their divisional games in their own time zone and travel less (especially teams like the Wings who got screwed being out West traveling 2000 miles to play conference games 3 time zones away and have wanted this for years), and the top 8 from each conference make the playoffs just like it is now.

Yeah, why did'nt they at least do it so that it is an equal number of teams in each conference, if that's still what they call it? It is'nt like they've cared much about Detroit before so it could be fixed.

I really hate the new conferences , assymetric and ugly.

Symmetry is important (at least to me).

When you have an even number of teams you split the league in half , morons.

No respect for math , order and beauty these days.

My thought is they are setting up for expansion to 32.

So the new destinations would be in the short changed conference.

I dont see much of a problem with the new alignment. Fewer teams in the west for now. Maybe the NHL knows more than we do and will announce an expansion of up to 3 teamsin the west (unless phoenix moves to a western city).

Seattle and Kansas City could be the new teams.

I dont think Quebec gets an expansion team, they will have to get someone who wants to move them there or they get an expansion team and Seattle or Kansas gets a current franshise.

the NHL should be looking to gets the best and most prosper franchise possible. Having as much team in the West than the East should be the least of their problems.

I think both Seattle and Kansas City are viable markets (I also liek Saskatoon and Quebec).
