Gropp is a 96 born player. This year the U18 IIHF tournament is for players born in 96, therefore if available and if he deserves a spot, he should be on the team...regardless of having a late B-day and draft eligible next year. He won't be eligible next year to play in the U18 tournament... so if he's available and deserving...giddyup

Barzal makes it just b/c he's an elite talent and lets face it, it's not easy piecing together a team for the spring IIHF tournament due to CHL playoffs in full swing.

Player Comparison

Anyone have any ideas on who Barzal resembles in the NHL?

I'd say Giroux.

Man this kid is freakin' good, reminds me more of a MacKinnon/Patrick Kane hybrid every day.

http://whl.ca/video/index/id/1391884171

Some of his skill here. I cannot believe they did not include Barzal's first goal, it was beautiful. It was just like this,

I would not draft this kid... he never turns out well for me in GM mode.

Edit your rosters like I do

Only problem is that he almost always ends up like 6'3 180lbs (same with McDavid) hahaha

Really? He's a three time Hart winner at 93 overall for me.

Yea, he is 4.5 yellow stars but, it took him 6 years to become a 74. Then by that time, he is 4.5 red and he ends up being a 83 when he turns into white stars.

Konecny always turns out better for me.

I've only seen him sporadically this season - and not as much as i would have like (although from what i did see i was very impressed!!)

with apologies for being overly annoying - can anyone from the dub crowd who has seen him *consistently* this year (i.e more than i have) give us a 'prospect report'. ... i've seen some full games online, a few clips, and him live a couple of times - can someone who's seen more comment?

I haven't watched him yet in the WHL, but am well aware of who he is and what kind of player he projects to be. But how has he actually been this year? (only answer if you have actually been watching him)

One of the more intriguing draft tidbits for me is who goes first, Matt Barzal or Travis Konecny.

Pros: Insane vision, great skater (more along the lines of MacKinnon, but not as fast), great play making ability, great stick skills.
Con: Only con I can give you is physical maturity in terms of body, which is common sense for a 16 year old. 99% of players aren't Ekblad.

I can't compare him and Patrick Kane as Kane is already an NHL all-star, but if there was a player who could *potentially* match his talent level, Barzal has to be one of the clear cut choices with that same style of game.

One of the best (and could be the best) 16 year old I have seen in the dub.

I still have my top three as,

1. McDavid
2. Eichel
3. Barzal

But that could change with the likes of Hanifin who I haven't watched yet (Konecny is in definitely in the top 5 as well, going to be an insane draft).

Here's Barzal's goal from Canada's 5-1 win vs Switzerland at the Ivan Hlinka tourney:

He is gonna make it interesting for top pick next draft with McDavid and Eichel... everyone thinks itll be a forsure 1,2 punch with those 2, but Barzal is going to wow a lot of people this upcoming season

Doubt he ever comes into the conversation for #1-#3 but he's going to be a good consolation forward prize.

Barzal reminds me a lot of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Both play out of the BWC.

Barzal was pretty disappointing at the U18 Camp. Tried to do too much every time he touched the puck. He has a ton of ability, but simplifying things would go a long way in raising his stock with scouts.

Couldn't agree more. That's not to say that the tools aren't there, he did score after all. But again, I concur on all points.

Would you say he has a Stranglehold on a top 5 spot?

He had unreal vision and superb passing and playmaking skills. Tries to do too much at times, but has goal scoring ability. My player comparable would be Giroux .

Has anyone had a chance to see Barzal this year? This thread has gone quiet.

Yes. Watched over half the Kelowna-Seattle game this weekend. Is a dominant PP guy right now, runs the show and opens space up for everyone. Finally opened up his goal scoring account too.

He was also very good against Portland too. 2 assists and a goal in the shootout.

I like the Giroux comp, better than Nuge, since it looks like Barzal has a sturdier lower half that helps him roll off checks when he has the puck.

The battle for positioning in the top 10 will be fierce this year. I know some people will have Strome over Barzal right now, but you need to look at circumstances here in regards to production. I haven't watched much from the Otters so far, because their streams are some of the poorest quality around, but in terms of role, Barzal draws the top opposition every shift...Strome gets whoever isn't checking McDavid.

Both good players, both playmakers first and foremost, one guy is bigger, the other craftier. Should be fun to track these guys. I don't see Barzal getting into that top 3 race at this point.

Awesome write-up Arsmaster.

I've caught every Otters game so far and Strome has looked fantastic. I haven't followed closely enough to see the quality of competition Strome is facing, but you've gotta think that he's playing against much weaker competition.

Barzal really excites me. Don't know why I haven't caught a Thunderbirds game yet. I guess I'm getting a little overwhelmed with the amount of must-see CHL games
