he was not. he was going to be RFA

Signs long term deal with full year under contract and remaining RFA at end of that year

It's a direct parallel (when considering Joshjull's comment that the extension made "even less sense" when it was brought to his attention that Skinner had a year left)

year left+still RFA = Skinner and Pommer prior to their long term extensions

CapGeek says he was going to be a UFA and I can't find anything that contradicts that.

Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier announced today the Sabres have agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension with right winger Jason Pominville, keeping him in Buffalo through the 2013-14 season.

The 25-year-old Pominville was scheduled to become a restricted free agent at the end of the 2008-09 season.
now that we cleared that up...

Somewhat. Pominville was coming off his second contract and had arbitration rights when he second deal ended, giving him the option of going to the hearing, getting a 1-year settlement and going UFA to follow that up. Skinner's still on his first deal.

Both deals buy up UFA years from both guys.

I can understand the 'Canes making sure they lock the guy in and Skinner's production in terms of goals-per-game at his age is up there was some great players. They're banking on him following down that path. Can't say I blame 'em now that they have him locked in for a long, long time.

Only a small one. Not that significant, especially considering there are MANY much better comparables.

Or sell them to Quebecor once the QC arena is built.

Only way buying that team will ever be a profitable venture.

Actually yes because it changes the context of their respective contracts.

-Pommer was going to have arbitration rights when his contract expired. He also only had 1 RFA year left. So his 5 year deal bought up 4 UFA years and only covered 1 RFA year.

-Skinner wasn't going to have arbitration rights next summer and would have had 4 RFA years left. The majority of Skinner's deal is RFA years (4 RFA years to 2 UFA years).

The Canes could have had Skinner for less with a 2-3 year deal. He would also still be a RFA at the end. I thought for a small market team that would have been the way to go. Basically don't go big until you have to. Skinner's cap hit of 5.75mil is right there with Jordan Staal's 6mil cap hit. Staal's contract was all UFA years and its not frontloaded.

This. Pommer had a lot more leverage in his deal than Skinner, plus the additional UFA years bought (basically you have to pay a premium to get the player to forego his chance of getting paid on the open market). Additionally, comparing Pommer's deal under a much different cap to Skinner's now doesn't work--the higher cap means the impact of the deal is much less now than it was back then. Back then a 5M deal took up more of the cap than it does now...and players who can get 5M now on the open market would not have gotten it back then as well (there is no way Wideman would have got a 5M+ deal if the cap was still in the 50M range).

Err, wasnt that determined the week of the trade? "We want the best Derek Roy we can get", and all that by Joey N.? Or is Roy having a heart transplant to make his play less selfish?

The surgery isn't the news. They're using the surgery as proof the league is expecting a lockout. Derek Roy missing a chunk of the opening of the season means nothing if they're not playing, so it was worth the risk.

Another Philly NHL-caliber Dman bites the dust.

With the upcoming lockout, I think deals will be far and between before anything is finalized. Lilja likely won't miss much time with the impending lockout

Gilbert (who cares?) Brule signs in Switzerland.

Claiming him last season might've been the difference between sitting at home or making the playoffs. I wouldn't have minded him as a current 4th line option either.

I'm pretty sure he can still be signed in the NHL within a certain amount of time. (6 months or something?) At least that's what I read.

What?

Trading a second for Antoine Vermette may have been the difference between sitting at home or making the playoffs. Not claiming Gilbert freaking Brule.
