$106.25m worth of contracts were handed out today.
The owners are kind of working against themselves.

Over last two years:

Lucic: 160 GP, 56 G, 67 A

Vanek: 158GP, 58 G, 76 A

And we all know Lucic is the leading physical forward up front for the bruins, if not in the league. So yeah, it kinda makes sense. I think it might sound a little high for an RFA deal, but I'd kill to sign him for the Sabres at that price.

Exactly the opposite, I think. Out of control contracts are proof that the league needs a new financial structure, not evidence against it. Owners never give away more money than is necessary to sign a player in the market that exists.

Guard the bridges and turn down the volume. It's gonna be a long and annoying one. Or at least feel like it.

Sorry, I don't see that being possible.

Last time was a complete paradigm shift with the cap. The NHLPA doesn't have a problem with the cap staying in place.

Exactly.

Once they get closer to the real deadline (the scheduled start of the season), one or both sides will start to squirm.
The fact that time is leverage is ignored by so many.

I got a good laugh out of the TSN poll asking when the season will begin.
50% of visitors think that there will be no season (the most unrealistic option) and only 10% think that it will begin October (the most realistic option given what has played out so far).

I think that's pretty optimistic. I don't expect a year long-lockout, but with the gap between the sides right now, I'd be very surprised to see them sort this out in time to play games in October.

Why would you get a laugh out of it? I'm sure those folks have past history in their mind. The last two work stoppages went half a season and a full season.

Personally, I'm expecting a month or so delay to the season.

The players will not feel any monetary loss until mid October so they are ok for now. Most of the big stars hung on for big money up front so they could hold out when they voted to strike or were locked out. The NHL knows that locking players out now is best otherwise the players would choose when to stop playing--juwst as the arenas filled up after football season or as playoffs neared when owners make their money for the year.

The players havce been brainwashed into thinking they lost dramatically in the last CBA. A 60% gain in wages in 6 years
and much earlier free agency- might cause neutral observers to wonder about that but Fehr has them totally convinced that the greedy owners screwed them--

Without audited p and l statements we do not know the actual roi of the owners--we do know some owners are using their own personal resources to fund the teams and we know that even rich teams do not have their share prices soaring where they are public companies--the Leafs for example. The Teachers Pension fund sold out believing there was not the growth available there to help out the the pensioners-they had squeezed the ticket holders dry.

I foresee a long term without hockey. I hope I am wrong---the NHL should honour the contracts they signed, the players should agree to a minimum 6 year contract that reduces the players' share of gross revenues to somewhere around 50 % within the next 3 years and the contracts already signed should be partially forgiven as far as the cap is concerned. Contract length need not change but every dollar the player is to get over the term of the contract is included in the cap divided by term with 5 year maximum. 100 million bucks over 10 years is 20 million against the cap. Players may not be stashed in minors or sent to Europe--they can be bought out but no cap avoidance. Cap space can be bought or sold but only for first or second rounds picks. Value for each pick on a sliding scale starting at maximum player contract for number one overall and sliding down to half a million for last pick in second round. Offer sheets for RFAs must weigh the value of the draft picks. Losing teams wtrying to get better who are in the bottom of revenue producers should not be cherry picked by having their stars offer sheeted for picks in the 28 to 30 area for the next 3 or 4 years. Add more picks/cash. Just a few scattered thoughts

Then let's have fun.

I don't really see that big of a gap.

IMO the sides will approach a 50-50 split and owners will agree to expanded revenue sharing, which will add incentive to cutting the dead weight teams.
Owners pocket the expansion/relocation fees and pay less into revenue sharing and the players benefit from increased revenues.

I put November as my guess to the start of the season. But that includes, say, 2 weeks of compressed training camps and preseaon or whatever the case may be. I believe in the NBA training camp + preseason only lasted about 2 weeks last year.

There's some good KHL games on today that are easily accessible.
Gonchar and Malkin are playing in their debut for Magnitka right now and Kuznetsov, Radulov, and possibly Datsyuk and Ovechkin will be playing at 11:30.

You can't watch the CSKA-Barys Astana game but Dynamo Moscow-Dynamo Minsk and Ak Bars-Traktor are there.

Ovechkin is up to his usual antics, playing only for himself and not caring about defense.
Malkin looked rusty and Gonchar looked awful.

Novotny (1+1, 6GP) captains while Klepis leads in points (3+2, 6GP); Chewy, however, has only seen three games (0+0) while MacIntyre has seen none (their starter Popperle has 0.99 GAA, .959 SV%, 6GP).

Avangard Omsk has Alexander Frolov, Karri Ramo, Anssi Salmela and Armia's ex-teammate Tomas Zaborsky.
