This post focuses on each player's play preference when in possession of the puck in the offensive-zone while on the powerplay. Much of what each player does is contingent on where they are positioned on the ice. A player set up on the half-wall or below the goal line is obviously more likely than a player in the slot to pass.
Habs: Quantifying each player's short-handed contribution
This post will focus on multiple short-handed statistical categories. It will show how each returning Canadiens player performed while short-handed during the 2011-12 season.
Graphs shown include:
-Short-handed defensive-rating
-Successful short-handed defensive plays per-minute
-Successful short-handed puck-possession plays per-minute
-Short-handed tendencies with the puck in the defensive-zone
-Short-handed blocked shots per-minute played
-Short-handed intercepted opposition passes per-minute played
-Short-handed puck-battles won per-minute played
-Short-handed loose-puck recoveries per-minute played
-Short-handed dump-outs per-minute played
The percentages expressed in these graphs represent each player's true shooting percentage. Instead of basing the percentage on shots that hit the net, this percentage is based on the number of shots each player attempted. Included here are shots on net, shots that are blocked, and shots that miss the net.
Each player's goal total was divided by their total attempted shots to determine the number in the graph below.

Surprised at his defensive stats, thought plekanec would dominate it
Keep in mind Plekanec would be facing the better players. But Eller's got a really solid defensive game. He was also a crazy good penalty killer. Best shots against rate in the entire league last year.

Still a posession beast when he has the puck, but defensively.
I wonder how much his positive risk/reward has to do with the quality of opposition though, those numbers look rather generous for a player who was essentially a non-factor even when healthy.

He was racking up assists at a pretty solid per hour rate under Martin, his team on-ice shooting have reverted to the mean.
This paints a pretty accurate picture of Gomez, still a great puck carrier, a high volume (but not efficent) passer and has completely lost the ability to shoot at the NHL level. Which is a strange skill to have just die on you but he was always a marginal shooter.
His defense has gone ugly though. His shooting may have crippled him but that's what will put him in the ground.
The successful dump outs per minutes stat looks pretty important, so does the risk reward rating and defending in d zone. I'd think passes, dekes and blocked shots is more about style than impact for a forward.
Eller may have been Martin's best pupil, he never even played regular PK or was seen as a shutdown guy before Montreal.

Fans who complain about Eller's offensive output completely ignore just how incredible it is that he went from a complete lack of understanding of the defensive side of the game (beyond being big and working hard) to the second best shutdown defender on the team behind Plekanec in two years, which for someone his age is a significant achievement.
Of course said people also ignore just how good he is at keeping puck posession, but apparently if you don't get assists you aren't a good C regardless of context....

Lets put it this way, over the past two years there is about a 1 goal per hour difference Desharnais and Eller in on ice scoring.
Co-incently its the same amount of difference you'd expect from the difference between Desharnais's best two regular linemates (Cole+Pacioretty) and Eller's best two regular linemates (Kostitsyn+Moen)
to be fair, both Pacioretty and Cole's expected goals were up last year, which can be partially attributed to Desharnais amoung other favourable factors (experience, quality of opposition, etc.)
For those pointing out that Desharnais played bottom lines the year before, yes but his main linemate then was Pouliot (72% of the time, which is attached to the hip) who is a strong ES goalscorer in his own right. He was playing on an offensive line.
Desharnais top 3 linemates in past two years are Pacioretty Cole and Pouliot, all above 1 goal per hour scorers. Eller's are Moen, Kostitsyn and Darche all below them in goal scoring by a fair margin.
Moen as the top linemate is killer. Sub replacement level offense.
