My statement is based on the fact I consider NHL players as the top 1-2% of all hockey players in the world, thus it is understandable they would earn salaries commensurate with that standing.
Yes, but the 700 highest paid CEO's in the world don't all work for the same company. Nor is "being a CEO" an industry.

Again: "CEO" isn't an industry. The CEO of Petro Canada is in the Oil & Gas industry. The CEO of Molson-Coors is in the Alcohol & Spirits industry. True, they make a phenomenally disproportionate salary, though I guarantee you that the CEO's of Molson-Coors don't make 50% of Molson-Coors revenue. In fact, the entire labor force of Molson-Coors, from the factory on up to the CEO, don't make up 50% of the revenue stream.

In fact, the entire labor force of Molson-Coors, including the CEO, earns 12% of Molson-Coors revenue (all figures from 2011):

You can't say that CEOs are their own industry. It's just not a plausible argument whatsoever.

Show me an industry structured like any of the "big 4": where the top 700 employees in the entire world, in their field, are both:
- employed by the same company, and
- take home at least 50% of that company's revenue stream in salary.

Peter Regin has signed with Swiss NLB club SC Langenthal coached by fellow dane
Heinz Ehlers the father of 2014 draft prospect Nickolaj Ehlers.

Hope he does some damage

Yes, I am. How much they make doesn't affect me at all.

.
I believe what I said was the top 1 - 2% of employees in industry make as much or more than a professional athlete. I believe that to be a true.

I recognize that corporations don't pay 50% of gross revenue in salaries, but I also understand that corporations don't hire and attempt to maintain the top 5% of the talent pool in their specific area of expertise. This doesn't occur for numerous reasons, only one of which a corporation controls, costs.

Professional sports on the other hand are driven to hire the best, the top 2 -5 %. In exchange for hiring the best, the big 4 pay dearly, which in turn allows them the opportunity to charge fans of the game exorbitant prices.

Professional sports owners and players are not mutually exclusive entities, as is the case in most industries. The owners and players are bound by contract, their mutual success linked to a degree not seen in most industries.

The reason owners of professional sport offer players in the neighbourhood of 50% is simply, without them they have no business.

To the bolded, this was my initial point exactly, it doesn't exist.

Therefore any attempt to compare an industry that strives to hire the top 2- 5% only, cannot be compared to any industry that doesn't.

The only fair salary comparison is to examine what the top 2 - 5% of the people in any industry earn. So without actually doing any detailed research, I submit that executives (top 1-2%) in most billion dollar corporations are paid more than professional athletes on average.

I realize most fans believe in their heart of hearts they would play the game for significantly less money. However the truth is none of us were dedicated enough or talented enough to be in a position to honestly make that assertion.

PS didn't ignore your pie chart, quick comment only. if the NHL produced a similar pie chart the players wouldn't receive 50%.

It's pretty obvious though how we would respond if we were players, and it'd be just like the players are reacting.

Why should anyone care (owners excepted) what the players make??

All that should matter is whether or not you believe you are getting value for the dollars spent to watch these players perform.

If not, spent your dollars elsewhere, it really is that simple.

The price of an NHL ticket, its merchandize, etc., isn't decided by player's salaries. The variance in prices across the 30 franchises is proof of this fact.

The NHL operates like most industry, price is set by what the market will bear. So if you really want to see players make less money, STOP supporting the NHL.

The NHLPA will offer a menu of 4 proposals to the NHL this afternoon. All with 50\50 split of revenues.. I think hockey coming back soon.

That's great news. If it's all 4 proposals are 50-50, there's a good chance hockey will be back Nov. 2.

But i'll try not getting my hopes up.

"I don't know what the next step is" -Gary Bettman

If these two sides actually cared about having a season, they would be hiring a mediator to help this.

@michaelgrange Only detail Bettman provided was that the player's proposal included an increased share of HRR in year 1

That's the worst part.

One side is proposing a 7% decrease, the other wants an INCREASE.

This isn't even close unless the NHLPA budges quick.

I hope the Fehr brothers fall off a cliff. So frustrating to watch them bring absolutely nothing to these talks. They are starting to reach Goodenow levels and will be canned if they keep this up.

What were the proposals though? They offered 3 different ones and Bettman said no to all of them.
