Why is no one suggesting arbitration? Or am I living in a cave?

So how about the latest comments from Hamrlik, Cole, Neuvirth, and Brouwer?

I particularly enjoyed Cole's labelling of Hamrlik as "selfish". Cole needs to get a grip; perhaps it is no surprise that he has bounced around the league a fair bit. Also I'm glad the Sens don't have a guy like Brouwer on the team - what a ********* thing to say about Hamrlik and Neuvirth.

So far the Sens players have been intelligent in their dealings with the media. I like to think that this is due to Murray avoiding *******s in making his personnel decisions.

Brennan, is an idiot.

70 grand for writing ****** newspaper articles suddenly makes Brennan 'the working world'. He realizes the average salary in Canada is like, half of that, right?

"If my bosses asked me to take a pay cut I'd take it."

Not only does he represent the working class, but he's advocating that anyone who is in the working class should just keel over to all of their employer's demands. That seems real pro-working class, there, Brennan.

U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson ruled in favor of the players on both the non-statutory labor exemption and the NLRB's jurisdiction, however the U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 to stay the decision.

The end result was a new CBA was signed, legal suits settled and no lockout.

Speaking of Don Brennan, I'm surprised more people never caught onto this beauty:

This was November 7th. Now, he's releasing an article saying the lockout isn't going to end anytime soon. Way to be, Don.

Yeah, I had loads of optimism that this lockout would be a short one but that confidence is quickly waning. I still think we get a season in but as the days goes on that thought becomes less and less.

I thought it would be a short lockout as well but I underestimated the stupidity of the leadership of both sides.

Yup, me too.

I thought it would be a formality. Why else would they wait until July to begin negotiations?

This is why:

Because this is the person who refused to start negotiating a CBA LAST November, a full season ago, because it would "interrupt the season", yet as soon as the season ended, he suggested that the players would be willing to play THIS season under the terms of the now-expired CBA, while negotiating a new CBA. So it would interrupt LAST season under the old CBA, but it would be totally fine THIS season under the old CBA.

I hate Don Fehr so much...

He's doing it for both:
a) ego, and
b) because he doesn't give a rat's arse about hockey (or baseball for that matter), and his complete apathy towards the NHL (and MLB) allows him to go for the jugular without any remorse.

He's selfish and completely uninterested in the long-term viability of the league... but evil is a stretch. He's just a douchecanoe.

You could make the same arguments about Bettman, however I hold Fehr exponentially more accountable because at least Bettman has been around for the long-haul, since the early 90's, and shows no sign of leaving soon. At the very least, that is in itself a sort of leash on Bettman: he can't go full-moron because since he's not going anywhere, he'll be held accountable for his actions / decisions / tactics the next time around. Fehr, on the other hand, is a one-and-done PA head, IMO. He was drawn out of retirement for this. I think by the time the ink is dry on this upcoming CBA, he'll mentally already have one foot out the door. It's a scary thing to negotiate against: a guy with literally nothing to lose during THESE negotiations, because he won't be back for the next ones.

So what's going on with this lockout - are they just going to forget about it?

it is what it is

Bettman is not getting paid, Fehr is not getting paid, the players aren't getting paid, the owners are losing money, According to Fehr, they've never been closer only 180m apart, and since then they probably haven't sent each other a simple email.

OT, but I just wanted to ask.

If you didn't notice there is a HF Least Favourite Player tournament going on in the polls section.

Neil is on the bracket, and I was just thinking that even though I like him, I might feel kinda proud if he won the tournament because that means he is doing his job right.

I won't vote for him as my least favourite, but I wonder if anyone else kinda feels the same way.

I feel like Neil is a lot more likable to the rest of the league than most other pests i.e. Kaleta, Burrows, ...etc

So, the Bettman suggested that the Owners and Players meet without himself and without Fehr present. I read something about the Players being allowed to have lawyers present so that they don't get fleeced. None of Bettman's or Fehr's little underlings either.

This might work... or it might not.

Personally, I hope the owners try to offer a deal that doesn't reduce total pay, maximum contract length, and increase the length of entry level contracts and delay theunrestricted free agency status by a year.

You know... maybe try giving something back?
