Hypothetical question:

If the new CBA requires rookies sign a 5 year entry level deal or whatever, would they extend that to recently signed prospects this year?

The reason why I ask is because if this new contract is bound to the previous CBA (which it seems likely at this point) why sign Yakupov now? Why not wait? It's not like they are going to lose his rights...

Because if there is a lockout at the start of the 2012-13 NHL season and Yakupov signs to play in the KHL and likes it... why risk it?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I don't think it would extend to five years. I could be wrong, but considering it is a legal document, the league can't make changes without getting approval from Yakupov.

I think EDM wants him signed in case there is a lockout. He and his agent have already specified Yakupov won't return to Sarnia. If there is no NHL, the only other place to play is the KHL and the Oilers don't want him signing a multi-year deal with a KHL team. I'm not implying Yakupov would, I just think EDM is protecting their assets.

Plus holding out on Yakupov(even though smart cap wise) might not be the best way to start the relationship with potentially your future best player.

Hope he didn't demand too many performance bonuses so that we can afford to spend more in the coming years.

True. The league would need the consent of every player who signed an entry level contract. They would need to re-negotiate their contract basically.

One problem is that Yakupov just chose the Oilers over the KHL with this contract. I'm sure there is always the risk that he bolts forever, but if he signed a one year deal with the KHL I think it would be better for his development if there was a lockout.

I definitely understand the mentality of locking up your best players though. Maybe he threatened to sign a long term deal with a Russian club as leverage in this deal?

All the allowable performance bonuses (Schedule A and B) for entry level contracts are clearly defined by the CBA. There are limits on the total dollar amount bonuses can achieve on aggregate. As the #1 selection Yakupov most likely will be receiving the maximum allowable performance bonuses just like Hall and RNH before him.

Every #1 overall gets max bonus. Plus they are completely irrellevent to the Oilers for the next two years as we are not going to be cap maxxed.
