Why don't we just sign him when he's a free agent?

Only way I want Getzlaf is attempting to sign him as a FA. I want no part in trading assets to land a player with that price tag.

Probably Baertschi, Brodie, Gaudreau, 2 x 1sts. No thanks..

You make it sound so easy. Just wait a bit, and he's all yours...

That assumes that:

1) He even hits free agency, and isn't re-signed by Anaheim.

2) That he chooses Calgary, because if he did hit free agency, you can bet he attracts huge interest. Not to mention the paycheck that would go along with said interest.

I'm sure I could go on, but 1 and 2 pretty much covers it.

And the only time I've heard Getzlaf talk about playing in Canada was in reference to playing on the Olympic team.

I think what ducks fans are expecting in return is way to much. I fully expect him to hit UFA and get a ridiculous sum of money throw at him

He's 11 months from free agency, not sure what the rush to offload him is.

This, right here, is why there is such a big difference in what you might expect, and what Anaheim fans might want. Getzlaf has said he wants to play on one team his entire career. That he loves the area, and that he wants to start a family here(which he's already begun). You're going to have a tough time convincing Anaheim fans he's going to bolt, unless we're late in the season and there doesn't seem to be progress in that regards.

If Anaheim fans see Getzlaf here long-term, then you can bet they are going to want the sun and the moon for him, if you want to pry him away. It's that simple.

I don't see a single Ducks fan naming a price for him.

Makes zero sense for Calgary to acquire Getzlaf via trade. Anaheim will trade him as a rental to another team. Calgary will make a run at him as an UFA.

The main problem is, that Calgary is not the only team in this deal with troubles at center. How would the Ducks look like at center after trading away Getzlaf for Backlund++?

S. Koivu
Holland
Backlund
Bonino
Cogliano (Can he still play center?)

Koivu is a great 3rd line center / borderline 2nd line center
Holland is just too young for a first line role and will most likely pan out as a solid 2nd liner.
Would you guys let Backlund play the 1st line? Don't answer that question, it was rhetorical.
Bonino is a good 3rd/4th line center but should be nowhere above that.
Cogliano basically played wing since he plays with the Ducks and would be comparable to Bonino if he had to play center

Plus the only really interesting pieces that WOULD make the Ducks listening you have are either wingers (Iginla, Bärtschi), picks, or defensemen (Giordano, to a lesser extent Bouwmeester). Of course could Anaheim use Top 6 wingers, but if the price is their only legit Top 6 center... Well, it would be stupid to do that deal. And their D seems set, so Giordano/Bouwmeester wouldn't be an option.

I guess, most Ducks fans can see your problems as they are similar to theirs... But Calgary and Anaheim are just terrible trading partners.

I think Cammalleri isn't too shabby if he plays the way he had last year, even if he's a natural winger. And who knows? Cervenka may also pan out as a fine 2nd line center.

So why panicking?

I doubt whomever acquires him as a rental will let him goto UFA, he isn't like a 35 year old rental, he is someone you can sign for 3-5 years if he does well. So yes Getz might be someone u want to trade for just so you get the chance to sign him long term.

Damn, Getzlaf and Perry have both left for UFA already? Getzlaf has a year left on his deal, if he was moved now the price would be huge.

Well you'd think so by reading some of the comments in this thread.

If Anaheim is so certain Getzlaf wants to play with them and only them, why not send him off for his ridiculous rental value and sign him back in the offseason? Unless they think they're winning the cup this year, I guess.

Calgary has absolutely nothing, that Anaheim would want as a centerpiece for Getzlaf.

Getzlaf and Perry both recently bought homes in Southern California, they aren't going anywhere, go poach another teams stars y'all

When are flames fans going to realize that they just dont have the assets to land big players like Getz, Seguin, Couturier etc.

The single dumbest post I have ever read in any sports related forum.

From an unbiased fan .. If Calgary want Getzlaf it would take something along the lines of bartchi + Gio + 1st . Honestly others teams have way more and much more appealing assets to offer up Anaheim..

The Flames don't have to pieces to get Getzlaf, if he was available. Also, not to offend anyone in Canada, but I seriously doubt Getzlaf will ever consider a Canadian based team. Paige Getzlaf is from SoCal and she doesn't exactly seem like the cold weather type.

If the Ducks are out of the playoff race by the deadline I can see him getting moved.
And the Flames who will probably be on the outside looking in yet again are going to part with their top young guy in Sven + other pieces to acquire a pending UFA?

Doesn't seem to make sense to me
