Contracts need to be clear and concise and I would be shocked if the NHL contracts did not spell this out clearly and concisely early in the document. Since I haven't seen the contract I was just curious how they expressed it: exact dates or years of service

that being said if i am writing a contract as GM after I have already decided to sign say a 30 year old star to a big contract for say 6 years, i would likely want to write it to cover the 6 years i intend, not 6 years of service at any point in the unlikely event there is a extended stoppage. I dont want to be paying big money to a 39 year old if i had anticipated to be getting 36 year old output with the salary, if i can help it with good wording, that is just common sense to me. If there is a 3 year stoppage (extreme to make a point) do the isles want 3 more calendar years for DPs contract or even nabakov 3 years later than we anticipated at a more advanced age? It doesn't affect my intent to sign him but covers all my bases in case there is a long term lockout. simple contracts work great when everyone is happy and things are smooth, but when there is a disagreement or unusual contingency it is important to have all your t's crossed and i's dotted, to cover these things (i.e. fine print).. i deal with complex contracts daily, albeit in a completely different field but the same principles apply.. the lawyers look for every single possibility and cover it, so the wording is airtight. (and believe me it makes me want to tear my hair out when the lawyers come back with all of their suggested changes to contracts we receive but if we ever get called into court on it i am happy it is there spelled out in plain language)
I get what you are saying but i'm going to venture a guess that it's the same for every contract and it's in "standard wording" what will happen during a work stoppage. I don't think some players would have years tick off while others don't depending on the contract wording. It's probably the stuff that is already filled in on the template before you add any additional things. What the actual results of a contract during a work stoppage mean I don't know, but since it is not something changed and probably standard wording required by the league it probably had nothing to do with Snow's decision to make the trade.

The grievance hearing took place on Sept. 4th and now it's just a waiting game for the decision. Heard rumors that it'll be resolved before the 15th lockout deadline.

If there is a lockout it actually would be good if we lose this case. All that being said I think we don't lose and their is a lockout

I'm going by nothing but gut feeling, but I expect a partial season, with teams playing 55-60 regular season games and the postseason.

Maybe wishful thinking on my part.

Finally, now hopefully there is going to be hockey this season so Visnovsky can actually play for the Isles.

Finally, some positive news.

Let's get the season underway and see if Vis does not start drinking the cherry flavored kool aide, like Nabby did

Otherwise we gave up a potentially high 2nd round pick for no reason. I agree with Crew that we will have a 55 game season but there is a chance that Lubo may on the event of a lockout play on Europe. I'm not sure what the rules are in that case.

I just went from a feeling of happiness that he signed, to a feeling of excitement about our teams chances this year now that he's officially staying, to a feeling of sadness since there probably won't be a "this year", to a feeling of anger that we essentially gave up a 2nd round pick for nothing.

All in a matter of 5 seconds.

I'm thinking there will be a shortened season as well, it would be an epic fail if they lose the entire season. I'm not too sure how the whole Europe thing comes into play here (may need to check out the Business of Hockey area on HF), but I'm not too concerned about the possible loss of the 2nd rounder if that happens. We've had enough draft picks and the system is pretty well stocked now. We just need our prospects to mature and develop which can't seem to come fast enough.

I still think as a pure hockey move, obtaining Visnovsky was a good one. Just didn't expect all of the baggage from it.

Typical Isles luck, a decision goes our way and there might not be a season

We all know the lockout is just a big cover up to make sure Visnovsky doesn't end up playing with the Islanders. Talks were stalled on both sides because they were waiting for the hearing to be settled. Now that he has become an Islanders player, the lockout is officially on to make sure no one ever has to play for the Islanders if they don't want to

Obviously, everyone is desperately fearing the chance of a lockout, but as a fan of such a sad organization, can we once rejoice that something went our way???

some tweets from interview with Vis' agent

BDGallof ‏@BDGallof
Just spoke to Visnosky's agent, Neil Sheehy. "Visnosky happy to be with the NY Islanders. It has nothing to do with NY Islanders..." #isles

BDGallof ‏@BDGallof
Per agent: "CBA issue between NHL and NHLPA. Needed language to be clear. Arbitrator ruling made the language clear" #isles

BDGallof ‏@BDGallof
Sheehy: "We feel Visnosky's addition to Isles will make their powerplay best in the league" #isles

Look at this way, if we never play we're tied for first!

if healthy, he'll be a great addition.

Ah, one small victory this summer. Hopefully the cba fight will be resolved shortly too.

He'd better report or he will look like an ass. That's all I am saying.
