So gave up on the roster, the 3rd line center and a forward who played 4th line minutes. Only thing is the $$ situation for the future. Awful big cap hit.

Come in with an attitude that you need to prove the haters wrong. Bust his ass with his work ethic and show he can still dominate the game periodically.
You have to think (well, hope really) that he's coming to New York a former captain, he won't have a letter on his chest to start this season. That alone should give him a chip on his shoulder and something to prove.

Though I'm probably over-valuing the captaincies of NHL teams.

Overall, great trade from a value standpoint. Keep MDZ, Stepan (duh), Hagelin, and Miller. Wow.

*I understand the cap hit concerns. But I have faith in Slats' plan, or should I say Gorton's plan.

Rick Nash is a gamebreaker. He gives us a huge asset in the transition game, a player who will have several shifts a game where he is a threat every second. The kind of player who makes d's back up. This addition in my opinion makes us favorites in the East (and no I was not fully confident in our ability to repeat before this move).

Obviously it will be exciting to see how Nash does with Richards or Stepan. But I think there are two huge reasons to be excited beyond that. The first is the motivation of actually playing for something now. The second is how it gives defenses that much harder of a time matching up with us (when Gabby is back).

On a personal note I will really miss Dubi and Artie. Two of the first in the "new wave" or homegrown Rangers. Great room guys, I wish them all the best. Only slight thing I worry about is what losing Dubi, AA, and Prust in one offseason does to the chemistry.

Yeah, because 30 goal scorers belong on the 3rd line (yes, I know he has never actually reached 30, but would have the last 2 years if not for injuries).

Either way, I am very happy with this deal. Losing Erixon sucks, but Nash is huge for us.

because Kreider is too good for either of those guys to play with.

I never get anything wrong.

But this was a great trade for the Rangers.

Funny line from Holik, though he's the last one to talk about people not earning contracts...

Bobby Holik ‏@holikonhockey
Scott Howson finally earned contract extension #sarcasm

The real question is why, when Kreider would far better serve the team in an offensive role, not in a grinder role. Boyle's 20 goal season was an anomaly, not the norm. More ice time does not directly equate to more production for him. Kreider's offense will be wasted playing with 2 "what-ifs" and "when they're healthy, they're somewhat decent" players.

Losing Erixon ****ING SUCKS, and i'm not going to be able watching Boyle be awful on the third line.

But if Rick Nash can pan out and put up 40 goals here, wow.

serious question, does adding Rick Nash before Doan signs give Doan an incentive to sign here now? Imagine the top 9 with him? he's gotta be thinking the same thing.

I didn't want Nash, but for a deal like this I'm not angry at all. Not thrilled, but happy. Have to think JT Miller makes the team now, or Doan signs, since there's a hole in the roster for a forward. I'm also curious who's going to be our 6th defenseman, because I don't think it'll be Bickel.

On a personal note, despite developing the belief that Dubinsky wouldn't be in New York long term and he'd be replaced by Miller, I'm gonna really miss him and Anisimov. Watching them grow up into good NHL players has been interesting and they've been a big part of the team for the last 3-5 years.

Time to get a Cup, that's why Nash is here.

Yep. Four third-round picks has to be the most the Rangers ever had.

Without Doan I would go with this as our lines.

Kreider-Richards-Gaborik
Nash-Stepan-Callahan
Hagelin-Boyle-Pyatt
Asham-Halpern-Rupp

With Doan

Nash-Richards-Gaborik
Doan-Stepan-Callahan
Kreider-Boyle-Hagelin
Pyatt-Halpern-Asham/Rupp

If we get Doan you can load up the top with Nash-Richards-Gaborik and still have scoring depth on the 2nd and 3rd line.

Already confirmed it isn't Savard.

I was thinking Goloubef until that last tweet from Bobby Mac. RHD with untapped offensive potential, and a Wisconsin connection. Was 1/2 of the shutdown pairing at Wisconsin. The other half of the pairing? Mr. Ryan McDonagh.

Well, we've discussed this before. I firmly believe that Richards and Gaborik need help creating time and space so that they can create high quality scoring chances, especially if they're on the ice together. Speed helps, but not as much as force and power. There are plenty of options, and this is assuming we don't get Doan, who we may get eventually. Nash-Richards-Gaborik, Kreider-Stepan-Callahan. Kreider-Richards-Gaborik, Nash-Stepan-Callahan. Nash-Richards-Callahan, Kreider-Stepan-Gaborik.

I just think that only do BR and MG need strength, but Hagelin's speed and defensive play would do wonders to help this team's depth on the third line, particularly with the loss of depth in this trade. He's a lot faster, smarter, and stronger at handling the puck than any of our other bottom six players right now.
