Does make sense. He could also make a longer term deal with lesser money. Something like $3˝ - $4 million / 4-5 years. I wouldn't oppose. I just hope he takes the slight discount and decides to stay.

I'll bet he gets offers around 5-5.5M from teams that are desperate for offense (Nashville, Phoenix, Columbus). I hate using the word, but Heatley's a journeyman; I'm inclined to think he's not very worried about signing with a different team who offers 1M+ more than the Wild.

I have a feeling the Wild won't offer anywhere near what other teams will be coughing up. Our top-six will be filling up in the next few years, and short-term deals usually end up costing more.

I have a feeling you don't throw away $1.5M to avoid getting a moving van.

2-3 years for $5m per sounds about right, assuming he stays at the 25g/50pt level.

No but you might throw away 1.5m to win a Cup.

The Wild might not even make the playoffs. Don't say the "C" word.

I'm not talking about this year. I'm talking about a couple years from now when Heaters contract expires.

Voted Kovy. Both were high end snipers who weren't much of playmakers. Kovy didn't have the points but didn't have the linemates either. He has aged a lot better than Heatley who fell off the map the last couple years. He's quicker, more dangerous to score, I think he'll have a much better career in his 30's. Heatley probably won't have anything left in the tank in five years.

Even with my homer shades on I would still take Kovy.

in their primes.

Heatley.

Kovy gets a free ride with that linemates thing...that's why his plus minus sucks, that's why he floats, etc etc. Now? better player obviously Kovalchuk--but with their contracts being what they are I'd take Heatley 1 million times out of 1 million.

In their primes, it's pretty close.

If we look over the best five year stretch of their careers:

Heatley - 399gp 219g 225a 444pts +96
Kovy - 399gp 230g 209a 439pts -42

Their stats are damn near identical, with Kovy having slightly more goals and Heatley having slightly more assists. Yes there's the glaring plus-minus, but look at their teams:

Heatley - avg 101.6 points, made playoffs 4/5 years, won 4 series
Kovy - avg 83.4 points, made playoffs 1/5 years, won 0 series

I'd HAVE to think if their roles are reversed, Kovy more than makes up that five point difference.

Skill-wise, Kovy had the speed to create opportunities (like Gaborik), while Heatley relied on Spezza/Alfredsson to draw coverage and set up plays. Heatley also had more assists because, again, when you're playing with two high end players you will get more points. Heatley has the edge defensively but it's not really a big deal.

Stats and analysis is good an all; but does Kovalchuk take countless shots at the Gophers and their fans?

Ya, my pick is Heatley without a second thought.
