PHI signs, NSH matches Shea Weber 14-year offer sheet ($7.857M Cap Hit) (Pt VIII)

The final thread?

FAQ
1. What's the compensation? The average value is just 7.857M, doesnt that mean it's only 2 firsts, a 2nd, and a 3rd?
A: No, as per CBA 10.4, the term used in an offersheet calculation is the lower of the term of the contract and five years. 110M/5 = 22M. 22M > 8.4M. Compensation is four first round picks.

2: How long does nashville have to make a decision?
A: Per CBA 10.3 B+C, if nashville does not exercise their right of first refusal within seven days, Shea Weber can sign a contract with the flyers matching the terms of this offersheet.

3: Can nashville match and trade him?
A: Nashville cannot trade him for one calendar year from the time they match the offersheet. If they wait the full seven days, they cannot trade him until July 26th 2013 (CBA 10.3 B)

4: Wait, what if there's an NTC/NMC? Then isnt Nashville stuck with this contract?
A: Nashville only has to match the principal terms of the offersheet, meaning the salary/signing bonuses/structure. (CBA 10.3 B+E)

5. What if nashville trades him right now to another team?
A: Nashville cannot trade him once he has signed the offersheet (CBA 10.3 A)

Should be matched by Nashville, but wont be matched. Big market team wins again.

Per Dreger, Nashville declined the trade proposal by Philadelphia and the Preds countered with Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier +.

Poile got told "No" by ownership on day 1.

Matched offer sheets get grumpily volleyed back within hours.

Not really. Often the team will wait before matching.
I think Nashville has to match or they might as well resign themselves to never being a competitive team. If I was Poile I would make the Flyers wait the full week.

Just wondering, when has a team waited around for no reason before matching? If they know they're going to match, why wait? Vanek's offersheet was matched within 5 minutes. How long have other offersheets taken before being matched?

Re: the "overrated Couturier" discussion from the other thread...yes, we (Flyers fans) probably do overrate Couts quite a bit. I'm not sure what people think Couturier's upside is, or who a good comp is, but for me I'd be thrilled if he turned out to be similar to Jonathan Toews. And value-wise Toews for Weber is probably fair. So in this case Weber is probably worth "Toews potential" + something, say a 1st. Or even + Mez and a 1st. But at the same time nobody's trading Toews for Weber, if the Hawks are in a position to make a trade for a Shea Weber they're not trading Toews for him, they're trading young players because they need Toews to contend. And that's kind of where the Flyers are right now, even though Couturier isn't a finished product like Toews is. Couts isn't a "prospect" anymore, he's a vital player on our roster. So even though something like Couts + Mez + 1st for Weber is probably value, it doesn't work for the Flyers. If there's 4 or 5 teams in play, particularly if a couple of them are rivals/divisional competition (like the Rangers and Pens) maybe the Flyers bite the bullet and make that sacrifice. But since they had the offersheet option they took it, and they're likely OK with losing out rather than what they deem to be "overpaying" (compated to what they'd give up if NSH doesn't match).

There is a reason every Nash fan have Couturier in every trade idea for Weber.

That sucks.

But eight 1st round picks over the next 4 years should see Nashville with tons of top talent hitting their system.

Poile asked way too much, and it's biting him.... if Philly told him they would offer sheet Weber, I don't see why Nashville wouldn't have known all the options, and the scenarios, and realized they might not be able to match all the money Philly would throw at him....

This one is on Poile.

Oh definitely. If you're trading with Philadelphia your priorities are Giroux first (LOL) then Couturier. After that probably Schenn, but for me there's a sizeable gap between Couts and B.Schenn until Schenn can put together a healthy year and gets himself back on track.

IDK, if they are still trying to trade him to Philly..........i think it's safe to say they dont plan on matching and are just bluffing in hope's of getting better than four 25-30th 1st round picks.

Poile/Preds ownership will match IMO, despite the latest rumors.

The impression in the TSN interview was that they simply didn't forsee an offer sheet of the nature (front-loaded, largely uninsurable with a lockout possible) that the Flyers submitted

Point is if a big market team can afford it and Nashville cant.........well they are who we thought they were.
