A 1 Year (overpayment) contract in the hood of 8.5M literally has zero risk.

I was actually thinking of the league minimum, but thought that would be insulting.

Just another attempt to get hits on a poorly written blog. I'll pass as usual.

That's a BINGO!

You don't have to be a "defensive player" to have an impact on goals scored against.

Just because he isn't a Selke candidate doesn't mean the Leafs couldn't benefit from his skill set. As much of a wimp as he may be.

I would love if Burke signed Semin, the guy gets a lot of hate for how good he is. Could really put us over, and we could trade some other forwards for assets and make room.

What do they need the cap space for if it's a 1 year deal?

The amount he gets is pretty much irrelevant especially if it leaves them with 6M+ pro-rated cap space dollars at the deadline.

1 or 2 would be in and out of the press box and 1 or 2 would be traded.

Would you sign Semin to say 5 years 5-6m per, trade Kessel for a #1 center with some size (lets assume Getzlaf straight up for simplicity) to get our top 6 looking like:

Lupul - Getzlaf - Semin
JVR - Grabo - Kuli/Frattin/Kadri

Top 6 would be pretty well set after that. Depth can then be used to address goaltending/upgrades on defense. Do you think this is the right path to pursue however?

Hockey is a team sport. +/- for individuals is just silly and you know it. Especially for the crazy scoring capitals.

I can't think of a less Brian Burke/Randy Carlyle-type player.

Just an unrealistic, awful suggestion.

Our problem isn't our scoring, it's our defence.

Odd how a talented player like Semin, who would be willing to take a 1 year deal, would still be left on the UFA market?

A good +/- is largely a team product and that will happen playing on the Washington Capitals. You mention he's 6'2 209 but he hardly uses his body as shown by his whopping 31 hits in 77 games. Carter Ashton had more hits in 15 games played. He doesn't play D and also put on a disappearing act in the POs. Why do we want him on our team again?

There must be something about him which makes teams shy away... what could it be?

And he plays even smaller than even our own Phil Kessel, atleast Phil now plays a 200 ft game, and is a much better team player. Not a good point, pointing out a player's size that plays closer to 5'10 165lbs.

He may be big, but he doesn't play that game. The general theme of this offseason for our conference seems to be adding physicality. Guys like Prust and Ott. We did fine against teams that didn't play a tough game. Those were the games we had a good chance to win. The games we got outclassed were games where our players were just too small to compete. We had no answer to the Bruins. You should be looking to improve from your weakness, not your strength. To commit to Semin for what I expect to be a long term, would mean we seriously need to reconfigure the rest of our lineup to accommodate another small skill forward. It just doesn't make sense when you already have a very similar player already in Kessel.

Carter Ashton also had ZERO points. Are we seriously complaining about hits when we have Kessel on our team? Good grief
