Kane considering six-year, $29 million deal from Jets
But why offer sheet if it's just a small bump up and you know the other team will easily match. You are just escalating salaries and opening up your RFA to a few pissed off GM's. What Philly did to Nashville offer sheeting Weber is an order of magnitude different then bumping up Kane by less than 1 M per.
I like how everyone is scheming up offersheet amounts. I'd bet my house the Jets would match any realistic offer someone might throw out there.
This.
This isn't the 90's where other teams will try and sign away the likes of Tkachuk and Selanne because Winnipeg can't afford to keep everyone.
Winnipeg isn't Nashville. The Jets were amongst the 1/3 highest grossing teams in the league last year and a huge reason why the salary cap itself increased by so much.
Kinda fun to see everyone wanting their team to offer sheet players left and right, yet still Homer is the devil himself and no other GM will ever do business with him and every single Flyer will get offer sheeted for eternity.
Salary caps rising, can't find too many 2nd/1st liners, especially those who are 20. Guys who are scoring 57-60 points are getting $4-5 anyway. You'd expect Kane to score more points as a 21 year old and with better linemates.
I hate to be a butthole, but someone needing a 2nd line winger should offersheet 10yr x 6 sheets, easy.
If Van did that I would be very happy. But I'm sure they'd offersheet Edler back.
What makes you think the Jets wouldn't easily match either offer sheet. They were top third in revenue last season, they have guaranteed sell outs for 3 more years with a 8000 person waiting list for season tickets, and one of their owners is the richest person in Canada. Just because they don't throw their money away doesn't mean they won't keep their young core together.
Very nice deal if he accepts it, good term and good money for a second contract. As an Oilers fan I'd hope he takes it so they could use the Kane and JT contracts as a comparison when Hall and Eberle need to be re-signed.
Okay he's leaving maybe $5 M on the table but at the end of the day at least it gives him a long-term deal so stability and he doesn't have to worry about another contract as an RFA, he can sign his next one as an FA.
Btw, a $4.8 M cap hit might be a steal if he's an FA but for an RFA...it's fairly on par with many of the other ones. Not a Doughty-esque overpayment but on par with Tavares or Myers or Perron for example.
Ya i changed that... even still the figures look like this:
The article you reference is from November and using revenue values from the previous season (mentioned here: http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/sh....php?t=1094859), so prior to the financial outcome of the Jets' first season being known.
The Jets were not a revenue-sharing team last year, meaning they could not have been in the bottom 15 teams in the league:
As mentioned in that article, it's generally believed the Jets took in somewhere around $100 million last year, and a few hockey reporters have said they were in the Top 10 although AFAIK that hasn't been confirmed. But we know by definition that they were Top 15.

Someone needing a 2nd line winger isn't going to trade their next 4 1sts for one. You trade the total salary by the length of the contract or 5, whichever is smaller - 12M in your example, which is 4 1sts.
For people saying Kane should get much more, he may still. I wonder if this was just a leaked offer. It said Kane is Considering it, that doesn't mean he's close to signing it. He could consider it for 48 hours and then him and his agent go back and say after thinking it over and comparing it to others we want x money for x years. Maybe he's just trying to gauge his value by reading thru hfboards
That'd be a great deal for the Jets. With 30 goals and 57 points at 20, imagine how good this guy is going to be in 5 years...and with a $4.83M cap hit.
