The Philly offer sheet may open the door to more now. I doubt Burke would ever do one though.

Am I the only one who is hesitant trading this years 1st in the case of a lockout? That is a top 5 pick unless I'm unaware of something. A top 5 pick in a draft year like this is something teams drool over.

When you add Jamie Benn, the logical conclusion is your team gets better.

Wow, just read it's from Eklund, ever since the Weber offersheet he has been throwing offersheet acquisitions out wherever he can.

Burke would do an offer sheet he even reacquired picks to threaten Boston with one for Kessel. He definitely doesn't like resorting to that though, and his stance with long contracts pretty much means that Dallas would match anything the Leafs offer.

Sometimes the logical thing doesn't happen.

Beauchemin and Komisarek signings were busts, Toskala was god awful. A LOT of things went wrong that season for us to end up where we ended up.

I'm willing to hedge my bets that this current incarnation of the Leafs, with the addition of Benn, would not suffer the same fate. It's too improbable.

If you pay full retail you may or may not come out ahead in the long run.

That's how you end up losing current leafs since they'll want that too.

NOT BAD.

Benn for Kadri + Bozak + MacArthur + 1st + 2nd?
Take out MacArthur from the Benn deal and send him to SJ for Clowe

That would be a much improved top 9 offense. But our problem last year was goaltending and defense. If we give up a 1st for Benn we best make sure our defense and goaltending will not repeat last years results.
A better forward line up will help with that, as well as RC defensive and detailed oriented system.

How was the Beachemin signing a bust? He got us Lupul and Gardiner.

Benn does a hell of a lot more than Nash. Benn is a beast. Huge hits, great fighter. Nash may be better offensively now, but not for much longer IMO. Nash is easily a 1C and he's been steadily improving.

And I'll go through your critique of my proposal.

- the 1st would not be bottom 5 with a top-six of
Lupul - Benn - Kessel
JVR - Grabovski - Kulemin
and less Gustavsson in net
- I don't undervalue Kadri. I like him but I see him for what he is. He, by no means, walked all over the AHL. He may be a good player before but IMO his progress has stagnated a bit. I think he's a future top-six forward, likely.
- Bozak got 47 points playing with Kessel and Lupul who did, basically, all of the work. Again, I like Bozak, he's a nice player and decently skilled. But easily replacable.
- 20 goal/60 point scorer and last year 40-some point scorer. MacArthur is another expendable piece.

That being said, it's not going to happen. I just like dreaming lol. But an overpayment is the only way you get Benn, and he is exactly what this team needs.

IF Jamie Benn is not going to sign in Dallas...you offer them a decent package for him, player + prospect + 1st rounder (maybe more). This would make my summer.

More then likely, we'll get Morrow.

1) It's Eklund
2) Offer sheets are rare
3) Nieuwendyk is a former Leaf executive and friend

If you needed more proof than #1, I dont know what to say.

I do not want to trade next years 1st, but it is a league wide lottery where there is a 6% of being 1st overall. There is nothing, anywhere in the rules of the last lottery after the lockout which guarantees anywhere near a #5 overall pick.

And the chances of a year long lockout is very very low, IMHO.

After coming from a season where we just finished 5th last?

IIRC we finished 7th last, added Kessel and finished 2nd last.

And you hang with imporbable?

Well if there was, you can sure bet Columb will get #1, GB sees how the NBA fixes those kind of problems when key players leave poor markets .

No need to point out this last draft, they did Colum a fav, they did not want to get stuck drafting another Ruski.

Thoughts?
How long before people understand that Burke will not offer sheet anyone... ever... Just stop...

I don't like Eklund and his false leads but that statement you just made you could have kept to your self. People posting like you just did are a joke if you have a problem don't post in this thread and try contributing some where else with some knowledge.

I would love to steal Jamie Benn out of Dallas but the reality is, we can't pay the price Dallas will want in a trade and there is NO WAY IN HELL they don't just match any offersheet we sign him to outright!

After Nashville just matched Webber's $110mil deal, it set the bar. Don't mess around because we will match!

No top tier RFA is getting signed to an offer sheet this summer unless its just a blatant attempt to screw over the cap situation of the other team.
