Board to Board Mock-Preparation

Our pick is up in roughly 24 hours or so, I thought I'd start this thread and see what Flyer fans thought, 6 hours seems like a short time. Do we want to take Esche, because he's probably the best goalie out there, aside from Belfour, and age has to be a factor. Peter Forsberg hasn't been protected, but there are so many questions with him. Players like Ziggy Palffy and Ed Jovanovski are still out there.

If you want a list of the taken and protected players there is one in the Mock Draft board.

Let's ensure our team is the best. Go S.O.B

I don't think we need Esche as much as we need great defensemen in front of him. There are guys good enough that should be around with our next pick, but stars like Robyn Regehr (my pick) and Pavel Kubina won't.

Forwards: Palffy, Forsberg, Demitra, Alfredsson, Kariya, Kovalev
Defence: Jovanovski, Regehr, Blake, Zdlicky, Zubov, Gonchar
Goalie: Esche, Belfour, Joseph, Aebischer

Damn this is hard. I don't know what I'll choose.

Robyn Regehr, I think is the best player available, he is one of the premier defensemen in the league but no one knows that because he plays for Calgary.

Jovanowski if available, Regher if Jovo isn't.

For defensemen, Gonchar hands down. There is no doubt he is still the premier no 1 offensive defenseman in the NHL. He is 29, so has plenty of hockey left in him. Unlike most offensive D-men, His defensive play is not below average. He handles the puck well, moves it forward. Can play physical when he needs to, and of course has the hardest, most acurate shot in the NHL, forward or defensemen. Jovo is over rated, and Blake is at the end of his career.

At forward, I would take Pallfy if available, then Alfreddson.

finally, Esche may be the best available goalie right now. Taking him might be well worth it, since it seems most teams with great goalies have kept theirs.

Yeah, I think by the time our pick comes around again, we'll end up with only low-level starters left.

If we want a current starting NHL goalie with good trade value, I say Esche. I still lean towards getting a superstar defenseman or high scoring forward though.

If we dont take Esche, things still arent too bad out there goalie wise. I count 11 teams with no starting goalies right now in the board mock, two of which have already drafted in the first round, leaving 8 teams with at least two picks before we draft again.

Heres a rough list in of available goalies than I think are decent, which will probably go in the higher rounds or until all teams have their starting goalie. I would eguess probably half these guys would be around by our second or even third pick.

Robert Esche
Dwayne Roloson
Mika Noronen
Martin Prusek
Frank Nitty
Toivenen
John Grahame
Vesa Toskala
Manny Legace
Manny Fernandez
Martin Biron
Cristobal Huet
Kevin Weekes
Martin Gerber
Ed Belfour
Ollie Kolzig
Cujo

I've mulled it over, I would vote for Alfredsson right now. Not many guys like that are left at forward. Plenty of good D still around. Esche is the best goalie left, but after him there are still lots of good ones to chose from. The really dominant ones have already been taken or protected.

There are a few of those guys on that list that are backups that if given the chance can be as good as Esche was or can be. Toskala is one that comes to mind. I mean Esche was one of those guys before last season and he wasn't too bad last season.

Count on Vancouver picking Alfredsson. If we go with defense check out the Calgary depth chart; If Regher is picked then Leopold won't last our second and vica versa.

If they dont take Jovo or a goalie.

If not Alfie, then Ziggy Palffy is just as good. My only concern with him though is his dislocated shoulder which ended half his season. Either way we pick up one of the last available superstar forwards. There are lots of very good defensemen left ( Regehre, Gonchar, Jovo, Johnsson, Hannan, Blake, Foote, Leetch, Boyle, Modry, Coburn, Kaberle, McCabe, Hatcher, Zubov, Souray, Komisarek, to name a few).

I think we should go with Esche since he's proved he can be a starter already unlike Vesa Toskala and Martin Biron (inconsistent). I was going to suggest we take Gonchar but seeing all the other defensemen still around I say we skip on him. I think we should really take Kariya and ignore the season he just had. He is a top LW in this league and is a few years younger than Alfredsson.

1. Esche
2. Kariya
3. Alfredsson
4. Palffy

Also try and get Johnsson in the next 2 rounds.

Yeah, Mojojojo has won me over, also I think goalies are easier to upgrade in a simn league with picks and so on than it is to acquire a franchise forward.

Thought you'd might like to know that the general consensus in Vancouver is Sergei Fedorov.

There was a lot of drooling over the idea of putting an elite centre between Naslund and Bertuzzi.

I think we get a forward who can score. Alfie would be my pick. There are too many Dmen and goalie's out there right now to use an early pick on one.

There are a lot of guys who can score, but there are not a lot of guys who are #1 defenseman in the NHL
