I really thought these guys would all be closer. Jagr had a higher peak season, But he never had play in the same time as a prime Wayne.
I'm not sure why you'd think this was close, based on this recent poll, where Jagr had 39/90 votes for 3rd best forward since expansion, with his next and most likely competitors (Lafleur and Messier) receiving 10 each:
I cast the first vote for Stastny solely because I loved watching him and his two brothers together on a line controlling the puck like it was theirs and they weren't going to let anyone else play with it. Saw them work their magic against the Rangers at MSG and became an instant fan.
Jagr, rather easily. It was Jagr who also had some mediocre teams like Dionne but at least Jagr got into the postseason and then led his team further than they should have gone. Dionne might be on par with Jagr if his playoff portfolio mirrors his regular season one. But it doesn't. Plus Dionne never blew the NHL away in points either. Jagr did. Hard to believe between the two there is only one Hart Trophy though. Wow.
Stastny was a marvelous player but I still have him a notch below Dionne. Not much though.
When comparing forwards offensive abilities, i see Jagr ahead of basically everyone not playing with #'s 99/66. It might be just my fanboyism towards the 90's hockey. But i do honestly think that if rate the offensive abilities with forwards Lemieux/Gretzky are on their own tier. Jagr is alone in the center of the gap between 66/99 and the rest.
