I'm all for bringing in Semin. IMO he's a much better fit on the second line than Doan is. Wouldn't want to go to long in term, but if it's going to take term to lure Doan, I'd rather take the risk on Semin.

Pure offense, just what some complain about most. But then it's available for free and they don't want him? Must have terrible advanced stats.

Probably goes against Gillis' philosophy of only bringing in character people. But Semin does have the best shot in the league.

Semin along with the Sedins, Garrison and Edler would be a lethal PP unit.

however, over the last 3 years, those numbers are

reg season, he is a .893 scorer (192 pts in 215 gp over last 3 seasons)
post season, he is a .400 scorer (12 pts in 30 gp over last 3 seasons)

he got better in the reg season, and worse in the playoffs
that puts him closer to the Higgins/Hansen/Raymond range than the Burrows range, to say nothing of kesler/Sedins range, which is what we'd have to pay him like ...

curiously, he was ppg in the postseason for his first couple years w the Caps.

IMO, pass on this guy, bigtime (unless he wants to sign for 1 year for $5M or less, which is completely unrealistic)
Perhaps the reason his stats have dropped so much is that his last 3 playoff series have been against Lundqvist, Thomas, and Lundqvist again?

There are question marks about his consistency. Still, I'd be willing to pay him Kesler money ($5 mill for a few years).

If we sign Semin I'd like to see Daniel play the point.

Kesler (down low/crease)
Semin (hashmark/slot) Hank (half wall)
Dank Edler

Unless one of our guys miraculously develop into a PMD by the start of this season, we need someone with a decent shot and great vision/passing at the point.

Canucks could get a better deal than Colborne and a 2nd, I have no doubt of that.

If Semin had no heart and 'didn't care' something like this would've never happened. I don't get the criticism or why people would say he has no heart.

I use to think that myself but it hasn't happened yet. Florida doesn't need him but are considering him for tcket sales if they can get him cheap. Toronto isn't offering much or deal would have been done. Not sure Blackhawks are a serious suitor and Luongo won't approve deal to Columbus. Pretty sure not another team in league has a need for a goalie San Jose maybe? Only team I see he's going to is Leafs and why would Toronto bid against themselves? Everybody in league knows he needs to go and really Toronto is only team who want/need him. Again Florida doesn't need him so why would they give up good assets? Were stuck with him until Gillis realizes nobody will offer anything better then whatever the Leafs are offering. I'd be happy with Colborne and a 2nd right about now.

You could swap Hamhuis in for Edler. He was who fixed out powerplay woes finally and I trust him more to man the point sole when Daniel inevitably sneaks down to play tic-tac-goal with Henrik, Kesler and Semin.

Agree. What a sensational line that could be. Obviously a risk of it not being very balanced, but in terms of skill and "hockey intelligence" that line would be as good as it gets.

Would make us much more flexible in terms of line changes than Doan IMO. Semin, Burrows and dear I say even Booth could be moved between the lines depending on what they are up against.

And if we really start to dream and Kassian develops into a top class "power forward" then he would add the toughness Semin wouldn't give us, but Doan would. That might be dreaming a bit, but many players have suddenly taken great leaps being at the same age as Kassian.

Semin > Doan for me.

Playing the bongos on Marc Staal defending Ovechkin doesn't count.

Although, I'd admit you guys are doing a pretty good sell job on Semin. I don't think he'll sign here though.

I'd deal him to Florida for a couple of seconds before I take that deal. It'd be doubly worth it just to piss off Burke if/when the Leafs tending tanks the season again.

If we miss out on Doan we are probably done trading and I think Gillis would hold on to Luongo and wait for a team to lose their starter or for that team with terrible tending gets off to a bad start and blinks ie a GMs blinks if their team gets off to a slow 3-7-0 start behind meh tending.

There is every reason to stack our 1st unit. When we had the best PP in the league in 2011, the scoring was mostly coming from the top unit. That's the way it works - most teams' PP2 is there to a) bridge the gap between 45 second shifts by PP1 and b) maybe score 1/4th-5th of the PP goals.

Think thats very possible. MG did say there is no time table, it could be Aug, Sept, Oct, Jan when he was co-hosting.

Wha? He ran into their goalie and then got jumped and had a tantrum.

Hell, Daigle fought 3 times in the NHL. The last one was the season immediately before he quit hockey to pursue acting.

We need skill and goal scoring, he provides that for us. Look at our power play down the stretch and in the late part of the 2011 run... it died. Semin is a fine young man and would be a perfect fit. Now that we won't be getting Weber our future plans have changed. i say sign him up.

I think Semin would be a good fit with Sedins. He can be excellent third link in a line and if the line gets rolling Semin gets even more comfortable and becomes a force. Thing is hes really inconsistent, when he was playing with Bäckström in the second line agaisnt boston he was great. But still over the hill Ovechkin who played basically alone agaisnt Chara/Seidenberg + Bergeron ( two grinders on his line ) he still outproduced him ( and Bäckström ) , and series agaisnt Rangers he was bad, then snakebitten and then horrible. So if i was Van i would offer max 1 y deal, and hope he gets better.

my guess is that given the dearth of offensive UFA options, there are several deals already out there for Semin north of $6M for at least 3 years, maybe as many as 5. I also guess however he is looking for a Parise-type deal. There's a reason he only signed 1-year deals the past 2 seasons, and it aint becasue he wants to play with better guys than Ovy & Backstrom...

I think its a massive pipedream to think he'd sign w us (or anywhere) for $5ish short term.

That top line also gets bullied by every team in the league. Hell even Montreal's shrimp line was tougher.
