Bought out players can't re-sign with the club for a year.
The reason Alfredsson was allowed to have his options bought out last time around was because the new CBA took out options on contracts... it was an exception they had to allow.
I disagree with that stance.
the only mention in the CBA i can find regarding bought-out players not being able to re-sign with the previous club is regarding the 2005 compliance buyouts.

I believe this is just another one of those things that has been spread by uneducated hockey writers and fans.
just so people aren't confused.. even if he signed an extention I highly doubt he'd play for both years. It's simply so he gets a signing bonus and the if/when he retires after this year his cap hit won't count against the cap as the 35+ rule only applies to multi-year extensions. So its essentially to give him more then 1mil to play this year.
Frankly I don't think there was ever any way in hell that Alfie was going to put himself through the rigors of another NHL season for 1 million dollars. If we want him back it's gotta be worth his while and who could blame him.
I'm standing by this, I want my name in glory when it happens. AND IT WILL.

I agree with this and I've been saying for years now that's all we've been missing. However, with the core being perfect age, the CBA in our advantage, our prospects getting ready at right time, I think we can acquire/develop both real soon. Biggest impact would be the loss of Alfredsson which may have to come via free agency or trade market.
