Eric Staal or Eric Stall?

I predict with Jordan on board Eric will be super motivated and ONCE AGAIN SCORE 100 POINTS. You heard it here first.

If, however, he gets off to a slow start *yet again*....and turns into "Eric STALL" as I like to call his alter-ego, stalled in the points standings and stalled like the team itself early this season...

...well, let's just say I will be PROFOUNDLY disappointed, and there will be no playoffs again.

But if he's a primed and ready Eric Staal...yes I predict 100 points, a playoff appearance, and at least one series win (hopefully against NJ). Call me crazy.

As low as scoring is, no way on 100. If he hits 40 goals he is doing more thna enough though. A PPG 35+ goal season in this era is pretty damn impressive. Perhaps if we had a quality scoring winger, his goal totals go down and his assists go up.

I don't think he will ever match 100 points again.

But if he stays Staal the entire year, then he can probably finish top 10 in scoring again. 85 points would be more than enough to do that.

I also expect Jordan Staal to match Eric's production. With more offensive zone starts and prime PP time, he could get 70 or 80 points.

It's time for the era of the Hurricane's Twin Towers to begin!! (Once I think up a pun with Hurricanes, centers and Staal, then I will post it. I know you all wait with bated breath).

The CENTER of a HURRICANE is the eye. We have TWO Staals, and a normal human being has TWO eyes.

HA! It's punny.

League scoring is down significantly from 05-06, from 6.16 goals per game to 5.44.

89 points today is the equivalent of 100 in 05-06.

You really don't want to use that nickname in games against the jets.

I can see him getting 100 if he plays the entire season like how he played the last half after Captain Kirk took over. Lets hope Kirk is able to keep these guys going.

I think there's a possibility Jordan outscores Eric. I honestly think he has a lot more natural ability, just never has been given the mindset to be that guy in the NHL. Curious to see if he can turn that on.

If Eric scores anywhere near 100, I'll be shocked. In 05/06 there was wide open hockey with tons of PPs and the Canes were very deep at the forward position and built to succeed after the lockout. Two teams scored over 300 goals that season, Carolina scored 286 and half the league had more than 250 goals.

In 11/12, only 3 teams scored more than 250 goals and the top team had 273. Carolina scored 74 less goals than they did in 05/06 and ended with 212 which was 16th in the league.

While a fantastic player, Eric isn't a great scorer or playmaker like the top scorers in the league (Malkin, Stamkos, Giroux). If he get's 80+ points, that will be a very successful season for him.

It's pretty obvious from Eric's body language that he hates his brother and is going to "accidentally" concuss him at the first available opportunity.

Now you know who is behind this idea to put them on the same line.

Me too. Staal is being underestimated my most people here.

I disagree, but it could happen. I think both Staals performing at their top ability levels means Eric is still the team's best player point wise and otherwise.

League-wide stats are irrelevant in my opinion. In fact, a deep 2005-2006 team full of scoring forwards should have depressed Eric's scoring, not enhanced it. He wasn't getting the ice time, and he wasn't the entire focus of the offense. The fact that he scored 100 hints that he could do it again.

I disagree with this. There's nothing they can do that Eric can't. And they all have weaknesses to their games. Stamkos a playmaker? Please. 60 G 35 A ?

That's fine if you disagree, but the facts and data speak for themselves. I never said Stamkos was a playmaker. I said Staal isn't the great Scorer OR playmaker that the top scorers in the league are (I wasn't saying that all those guys are great playmakers). Staal is not on par with Stamkos when it comes to goal scoring, not sure how you can dispute that. He's not the playmaker that a guy like Malkin is (who can also score), again, not sure how you can dispute that.

Even if I ignore all the data and just watch the guys play. Can you really say that there is nothing that Malkin can do that Eric can't? You don't see the skill difference in their games?

When Eric is at the top of his game? Not much difference. Some, yes.

I never claimed Eric was the best player in the league. I said he could score 100.

If Malkin is better, then maybe Malkin - 120 pts, Eric - 105, how's that sound?

Oh it hints that he can, I will just be shocked if he does. League wide stats ARE relevant when you are looking at trends, how the game is being officiated, and played, etc.. It's not that complicated Chuck.

In 05/06, Staal got 451 minutes of PP time which was tops on the team. He scored 40 PP points. In 11/12, Staal got 298 minutes of PP time which was tops on the team and he scored 23 pp points. So his scoring rate on the PP is very similar (.09 points / min in 05/06 and .08 points / min in 11/12).

The league has changed since 05/06 and the officials aren't calling as many penalties. In 05/06, there were 15683 minor penalty minutes in the NHL. In 11/12, there were 9086. That's 40% less PP chances now than there were in 05/06. No matter how good Eric Staal is, how will he be able to make up for the fact that he will be getting substantially less PP time than he did when he scored 100 points?

Can he score 100? Sure. IMO though, it is extremely unlikely, but I'd LOVE to be eating crow on this one at the end of the season.

So the number of goals being scored (and thus allowed, which is directly related to Staal's points, all of which come from other teams allowing goals) dramatically dropping is irrelevant to a discussion of Staal's point totals?

Quote:

Eric Staal, 11-12: 16:27ES, 3:38PP, 1:26SH
Eric Staal, 05-06: 13:23ES, 5:30PP, 0:45SH

So, in 05-06 Staal was getting three fewer minutes a game at even strength, but two more minutes a game on the powerplay. I would say that despite his overall ice time being slightly less, the quality of it was better. And that's not even factoring in linemates.

Teams got an average of 5.85 powerplays per game in 05-06 compared to 3.31 per game this past season. Do you think that has something to do with Staal's decreased powerplay time, or is that just an irrelevant league wide stat?
