Minnesota in a Winter Classic?

I want to see the Wild in a Winter Classic as much as the next guy here, but what will it take for us to get one and who would you want it to be against?

I think it will take consecutive playoff births (2+) with deep runs, and we will need some players to be inside the top 5 in scoring in the league. It will also depend on which rivalries might be re-kindled (Winnipeg & Chicago?) after the realignment.

I would definitely enjoy seeing the wild play a WC at TCF for sure though!

I'm not sure we need any of that expect maybe a playoff run this season.

I think we'll be getting one in 2014. We just had to rekindle the excitement of hockey in Minnesota and renew winning spirits. Check.

Winnipeg Jets v Minnesota Wild 2014 winter classic? Hopefully we will be in the same division by then.

It'll be Chicago. They will need a strong market and fans that will travel for the thing.

And I would bet a round of drinks it would be at Target Field over TCF.

If it is vs. Chicago I bet it would be at either Soldier Field, Wrigley or US Cellular.

It'll be Chicago. The Hawks have hosted one but not traveled to one. It's an NBC production so they'll want a major media market involved. There's absolutely no chance of a Jets/Wild winter classic. Toronto is barely a big enough deal to NBC to get one against Detroit.

If it's not Chicago, the only in division game I can see is Dallas. That's the only game they could piece together enough drama and storylines about to get national attention from.

My heart says Jets but my head says Chicago. Either way, it would be freakin' awesome. The Wild would probably first need to have some playoff success to get it. I suppose Buffalo did have the first one though. I think Target Field would make a better venue than TCF but either one would be sweet. Have the NHL game at TF and maybe a college game or 2 at TCF. Now THAT would be great.

Would never happen in a million years. The game needs to have national appeal, and Minnesota vs Winnipeg is only flyover appeal. I'd bank on Chicago being the opponent.

Such a shame. I understand the business side, but minny v winny would be a hockey lover's dream.

This is who I would want it to be against as well. Blues vs Wild are always good, physical games. Plus, the Blues are gonna be competing with the Wild for the top spot in the divison nearly every year I'd reckon.

Though I would love to develop sime bitterness with Chicago (again) and Winnipeg after the re-alignment as well.

Have it in Minnesota...tons of Minnesota connections from both teams (Parise, Backes, Oshie kinda, Gilbert, big maybe for Cullen and Langenbrunner but who knows). Perhaps a battle between former college rivals in Zucker and Schwartz...top foreign prospects coming into their 3rd seasons (Granlund vs. Tarasenko). Blues also have Barriball, Max Gardiner, and Cade Fairchild in their pool but yeah who knows where they'll be at that time.

Neither the Blues nor Wild are big enough of a national draw, and there's no other major compelling storylines with that matchup. The Winter Classic is 100% an NBC creation, and they won't approve of that sort of matchup, no matter how good of a game it would be.

So I suppose it should be vs Philly, Washington, Detroit, NYR, Pittsburgh or maybe Chicago, eh NBC? Like every other year.

This is the unfortunate reality of the Winter Classic. I'd be downright shocked to see a WC without an Original Six/Atlantic Division team included.

I think that if you can come up with a good storyline, it could be another matchup. That's why I've suggested the Stars/Wild angle with bonus controversy by having Dallas wear the North Stars jerseys. Something like that might tear headlines away from college football.

It could also depend on any rivalry that is made once we are in the playoffs even if it is not in our own division? Besides the fact that Vancouver is/was in our division, there was surely a heated rivalry the years following the 2003 playoffs.

I will put drinks on the line. Chicago. As Squidz said, this is NBC's baby and cash cow for wanting to keep the NHL. They need a big market team in there no matter what. Dallas/Minnesota is my dream matchup for it, as I think all of us would want too. But outside of those two states...who watches it?
