Leafs heart and soul?

In the past guys like Clark, Gilmour, Sundin and Roberts were considered the Heart and Soul of the leafs during their respective playing days.

Is there a player on the current roster that legitimately holds that moniker?

I think the Leafs would want Phaneuf to be that guy, but so far I can't really say I see it. He plays with passion, but I don't get the same sense from Phaneuf as I did from the past guys.

Do we need a playoff round or two to bring it out in a player?

Kadri has the personality that would be enjoyed if we ever allow him to play!

I would say Brown. He may not have the offensive talent but he is a warrior and will do anything he can for the team.Great energy guy as well. I would like Phaneuf to step into that role a little more.

When your team falls apart the way the Leafs did, and the kids play like shell shock victims, it kind of points to a lack of heart and soul.

Brown hands down, not even close.

The player hasn't materialized yet but Grabbo is closest.

Nobody, right now. Maybe Lupul, to an extent. The Clarke MacArthur of two seasons ago was, for sure.

Right now we're not much for heart and soul, which kind of sucks. Biggs, Ross, and Kadri in the future though.

We need playoffs. That's where they will be formed IMO

Playoffs makes heroes from unlikely sources, that's one of the reasons why I like them. Who knows who that guy will be on the Leafs, but If I had to bet I'd say Matt Frattin.

When you finish 21-29 the past 4 years, the question is maybe it's time to go out and find some actual, heart and soul players.

Everyone seems to keep mentioning Grabo? <chuckle>

Some of us remember Clark, Roberts, Domi, Gilmour, Tucker, Foligno, Bomber, Mccoun, Rouse, Mccabe, Sundin, Corson, Yuskevich.

Grabo? Playoffs? huh?

Id say we dont really have a player thats all heart and soul like a tucker/gilmour. Grabovski/Lupul/Brown are the closest

Grabovski strikes me as more of a reckless abandon kinda guy.

I will say this, a lot of players we have drafted of late do have a lot of potential to be heart and soul guys on the leafs for years to come. Nothing with the big club though with the exception of Reimer IMO.

Maybe Dion if he can get some support.

As weird as it may sound, I would not consider Sundin as heart soul type guy. He was more of a quiet guy, who went about his business, made his linemates better, but he didn't really inspire the team the way Gilmour or Clark may have.

The problem is, when talking about heart and soul guys, inspiration, versatility and a certain skill level comes into play. Bozak, Grabo, and Brown all play with heart, Grabo lacks versatility and grit, Bozak lacks a bit of skill level, Brown lacks skill and versatility, and none of the three really manage to inspire anyone else on the team.

I'd say based on the criteria above, Phaneuf would fit the bill the best, but he needs to get his workload reduced a bit to be able to be force on the ice on a more consistent basis.

Does anyone remember the turning point for Sundin in that regard?
From what I recall, it took a long time for Sundin to be considered a guy with Heart, probably had a lot to do with his demeanor, and the guys he was replacing.

Sundin may have been more skilled than Gilmour, as Doug never had to play with as many scrubs as Mats had to, but I never got the feeling that the team rallied around Sundin.
