Shane Doan at $30M for 4 years

Just trying to quantify where we stand as a fan base.

Let's say the Sabres signed Shane Doan to a deal worth $30M over four years. What would you think of it? Please vote.

I could live with 1 or 2 year over payment, but no way 4 is too many IMO

I'd do it...for 2 reasons...

Not because he's priceless....

But it would be great addition for the young guys to learn from a guy that has respect thruout the league and plays game as it should be.

Would be another step in showing league (FA's) Buffalo is serious about winning and get over the stigma that is hanging over Buffalo.

Risky? You bet. But it's time to stop being so conservative in my opinion.

Take a chance.

I voted stupidly massive overpayment. Are we really that desperate for "intangibles" and/or power forwards that we'd offer that for an aging Shane Doan? I hope not.

Pfft, I'd rather have Doan at 7.5 for 4 than Leino at 4.5 for 6. At least if Doan's play goes down, we're getting a good two way player that's physical with leadership as opposed to a one dimensional, prima-donna soft whiner.

That being said, I don't want two stupid contracts bogging us down so it's a no from me.

Didn't all of the responses under the Doan thread (many of which commented on that rumored offer) make it pretty obvious what everyone thought....?

Too much money that's locked in on a 35+ contract.

Cheaper it's worth consideration, but not at that price.

He can pick term or money, not both. No. If he doesn't sign here that sucks, but its fine.

Don't the Lightning dangle Malone every offseason?

I'll be happy that they signed him, ecstatic even. Funny thing though, I'll be expecting a magic trick of some sort over the next several years that will make his contract, sensible. Signing Doan will force moves and reshape the roster for years to come, perhaps even beyond his usefulness.

I vote no, because my deepest fear is that it will make resigning Vanek to difficult. But, I still want them to.

To me it's not as much the overpayment as the risk with the 35+ clause.

Ruff is on the hot seat. 2 years of no playoffs and 6 years of not getting out of the first round (following this season) would put the onus directly on Darcy to fire him.
Sabres will overpay for Doan because with the current roster, making the playoffs is a possibility. Making it into the 2nd round without Doan seems highly unlikely.
Would I like to have Doan for 3 yrs/ $6mil per.....yes. 4/$30...no.
It's sad that no one Darcy has drafted has stepped up to provide leadership and toughness, so now they WILL have to overpay...ugh

On this whole "4 year 30 million dollar offer thing"

Did anyone ever take a step back and think that the whole thing could just be an agent trying to start a bidding war for his client...

I'd do it, though I wish there was choice three: "I'd do it, knowing it's a massive overpayment."

The future of the team - the team that can compete for the Cup - likely takes form somewhere around 2014 with the full time additions of Grigorenko, Girgensons, Armia, Pysyk, etc. to a roster that should already have (or still have) Hodgson, Ennis, Foligno, Myers, Sekera, McNabb, etc. That's a lot of young players able to be influenced. A guy like Doan is the type of player I want around all those previously listed, showing them the ropes of being a professional.

$7.5M is ridiculous for Doan. Sure, the team gets a power forward with a two-way game. And the risk is pretty high. I'm OK with it, knowing that what Buffalo's really paying for is the transfer (hopefully!) of professionalism, determination, and hard work from Doan to that list of young players. I'd pay $7.5M for that.

Not a popular position. . . and I know that as I post this. . . but I'll take it. Commence the beating.

Why are we comparing Leino to Doan? The difference between $7.5 and $4.5 is huge. Doan would be a good influence for our young players, but $7.5M for a player of Doan's caliber aged 35-39 is just rediculous.

I went with the worth it option. But I'm not saying he's priceless.

He's not worth the money it'll take, but his impact on the team on and off the ice will make the team MUCH better. Which is all that matters when signing a FA.

Let Pegs worry about the tab and let Darcy worry about the cap hit. All I care about is winning and Doan will help us do that.
