Snider is perfect for a #5 spot. Are they looking at his AAA stats and thinking he's best for a quick hit that can be damaging?
Walker at #2 is perfect. Snider at #5 gives us a legit chance to make up for Jones / McGehee's mistakes at the plate, leaving El Toro at #6 to relieve him of any pressure, giving him a chance to swing for the fences, if he prefers.
What about Juan Pierre? He could be had for cheap and we could add him and DFA Sutton.
Pierre is a walking joke, no thanks.

Which won't happen any time soon. San Diego wants the Moon & Antarctica for a guy who'd be a minor upgrade...they seem to think he's a prime Chipper Jones.

Snider should prove to be a useful player--even guys that hit about .250 with 20+ HRs can improve this lineup, an if he really blossoms, we will have a steal because our system is thin on that type of player. I like selling a bit high on Lincoln, and OF > RP.
I think there still might a minor trade but we could be done. I would like to see NH take a flyer on Steve Drew if the price is right.
Thinking about it even more, and hearing more takes on Snider including Keith Law's take, I really think this is a crap trade. We've dealt away a guy who had some definite value for the playoff chase for the sake of taking a flier on guy who has theoretical upside but no track record and serious question marks. And even if he does get near his upside, is not the kind of player that was needed. I hate this absolutely Littlefieldian move.

Keith Law tends to hate everything the Pirates do.
A crap trade? We got a young power bat potential player for a relief pitcher. Relief pitchers are one of the easiest things to replace, there's like a billion of them.
Pittsburgh Pirates @Pirates
The #Pirates have designated Drew Sutton for assignment, recalled Daniel McCutchen from Indy & Travis Snider has joined the team in Chicago.

That's your spin on it. I say we got rid of a guy who was doing a lights out job in a pretty important role in our pen, whom we do not currently have a replacement for who you could count on to do nearly as well smack in the middle of a pennant race. Not to mention a guy who has closer potential, which is a need on the horizon.
For your "potential power bat" who sounds to me like a project at best. This guy has some serious knocks on him about his ability to hit major league pitching.
By the way, Law actually liked the move for the Pirates. But he's not high on the Pirates so to him, making your team worse to take a flier on Snider is a harmless move. I disagree.

Miami sells real low on a pretty good player, essentially getting a draft pick back because Gorkys' bat is just too lousy to be anything more than a defensive replacement in the Majors...and there's little value in those in the outfield.
What this does to the line-up is anyone's guess. We've got three guys who can play first now...this may mean Jones is staying in right field and Marte and Snider will be platooned.
Pretty clear the Pirates acquired Gaby Sanchez to be bench/insurance for Travis Snider. I always liked Sanchez. Had very consistent numbers, including very solid OBP, in 2010 and 2011. http://mlb.mlb.com/tea... I know he was always one of the Marlins the Pirates' coaches were concerned about. This year obviously has been a big setback for him, but I'm always more inclined to look at longer-term patterns unless a player is old. Sanchez is only 28. Nice pickup. No splash, but OK. Gave up NOTHING.
Regardless of what role Sanchez, or anyone else infused into the line-up this past week, holds with this team...our bench just went from an absolute joke to pretty damn good. Getting a guy like Sanchez for the equivalent of nothing is phenomenal.
I'm not wild about losing the comp pick, but Sanchez is a better bet to platoon at 1B than McGhee. I am kind of ok with Jones as an everyday player but his defense is very bad. Will be interesting to see how Hurdle manages this lineup.
