#Yankees on verge of getting Casey McGehee for Chad Qualls from #Pirates
Just announced as official on the MLB Network.
Qualls will step in to replace Lincoln. McGehee was pushed down a little too far the depth chart, apparently. Considering McGehee wasn't going to be retained after this season he was an obvious choice to move for bullpen depth after Sanchez was acquired.
Qualls isn't anything great, but with the Reds and Cardinals improving their pens today it became almost a necessity to add someone there.
“The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile, but that it is indifferent. If we can come to terms with this indifference and accept the challenges of life within the boundaries of death, our existence as a species can have genuine meaning and fulfillment. However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.” - Stanley Kubrick
People are really underestimating the loss of Lincoln. Relievers may be a dime a dozen but relievers who are consistently solid are not easy to find. Huntington made the pen worse and may or may not have marginally improved the offense.
The Pirates got better at the deadline. I won't dispute that, even with the hole in middle relief. The question is HOW MUCH better? And better WHEN? Wandy was the right move with the right motivation. But the only two bats acquired, even with their upside, come with big question marks for 2012. This is the year that should have counted now. Make these deals in 2011, and I'm standing and applauding. This year is a rare chance, a special chance. Assuming otherwise is nuts, given wealth of factors.
