Starling Marte "I am home run"

Wow. I laughed when my fiance said "home run" as he stepped up to the plate.

Heard it's history next year - they'll be in the AL though so we won't be seeing them much anymore.

I would make fun of them, but unfortunately it is something us Pirate fans know all too well. Horrible losing stretches are all too recent for us. Which makes this season all the sweeter.

Build a real ****ing ballpark Houston. If Barmes is knocking home runs you gotta move the wall back.

What are the wall distances there? I'm not able to watch this one and I'm not familiar with the dimensions.

315 to left, 436 to center, 325 to right I think. It's a joke.

Pnc is similar... 325 to left, 410 to that center notch and 320 to right. Right helps with that 21 foot wall, but left seems short.

315 in left is really tiny, though. Just push that ****er back.

Yeah, but you can't just go by raw numbers...325 to left at PNC Park would suggest it's a small outfield, where PNC's left field is one of the most spacious in all of baseball...it's just 325 to the foul poll and then it quickly gets deeper.

Minute Maid's short left field stays that way for a good way before it randomly opens up into that idiotic center field.

Get rid of the hill and the flagpole and it's better...but to have that bandbox in left...it's a joke. At least the huge center field does help make up for it...unlike some other stadiums that are just easy to hit it out anywhere (coughcoughYankeeStadiumcoughcough).

On the flip side...I love Minute Maid Park in video games

Perhap a bit over shadowed by the Marte debut, and the offensive outburst, is the great job AJ Burnett is doing. Has been terrific. He is out there pitching as if it is a 1-0 game.

He looks locked in. Very impressive.

Yup, dominant. Their one hit was a well-placed pop-up basically.

Then again, it is the Astros.

Hypothetical scenario: the Pirates trade for someone like Victorino who can be a solid leadoff hitter. How do you set up the rest of the lineup, assuming Marte continues to stick? I'd say Leadoff, Marte, Cutch, Jones, Walker, Alvarez, Barajas, Barmes, Pitcher, but I'm not totally sure. I think Walker can give protection to Jones, and I think Marte is best suited to the #2 spot.

Edit: another thing to consider is that if Marte is on base when McCutchen is batting, the pitcher will be distracted or giving up stolen bases, either of which is a good thing for the Pirates. Obviously these are huge ifs that assume Marte will adjust quickly to MLB.

ok I know nothing about baseball, but what was the point in that? Hoping to force them to throw home allowing an easy steal to 2nd? Is that a mistake by Marte or a mistake by whoever told him to run?

99% a mistake by Marte, but Levya is a kind of an idiot, so you never know. Presumably he thought he could have just swiped home. If he scores before Cutch is thrown out, he steals home.

Burnett is really cruising.

It's a great question on the lineup. I think Victorino has to be the leadoff guy. I like Walker in the 2 hole. As for the rest?? Personally I think it is time to move Pedro up the 4th spot. But I can understand the hesitancy to move him. Of course Cutch stays in the 3rd slot. So that would leave Jones and Marte in the 5th and 6th spots. 7th and 8th, catcher and SS of course.

Difficult for me to say, as Marte is obviously a bit of unknown right now in terms of facing MLB pitching. So, conservatively, I would have him a bit lower in the lineup. But if they feel leadoff is best for Marte, then put him there, and you really deepen that lineup adding Victorino. Having Marte first, you can really do something different things with the order. Kinda liking the idea the more I think about the possibility of acquiring him.
