Surprised they couldn't get him traded for anything, he was bad last year but he does have some positive attributes. Would think he would be worth a waiver claim for somebody.
OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators announced today that the club has bought out the remainder of the contract of forward Bobby Butler, which was valid through the end of the 2012-13 National Hockey League season.
A native of Marlborough, Mass., Butler appeared in 94 games over the past three NHL campaigns with Ottawa, recording 37 points (16 goals, 21 assists) and 22 penalty minutes. He was held scoreless in three post-season contests with the club (each in 2012 against the New York Rangers).
Never thought he was NHL material, great AHL player though. The biggest mistake was giving him a one way deal. He won't get that from anyone else.
Could you give us some insight on that biggest mistake?
Because he will cost the Sens $400 in actual dollars?
Because his cap hit will be 50k and 200k in the next two years? (could be wrong on actual numbers)
Because he helped the Sens reaching the cap floor last season and this coming one?
Or because he seemed to be out of shape in last training camp and he didn't mention a groin problem that became an injury?

My bad, I forgot we were talking about a bottom of the barrel low budget team trying to reach the cap floor. In that respect I guess it wasn't such a big mistake.
I wouldn't mind the Pens giving him a shot. Worst case is he gets waived and sent down. If he turns it around we get cheap scoring depth, which we could use in light of Kennedy's struggles and Tangradi's continued non-development. Basically no risk, moderate reward.
Of course, a lot of teams could say exactly the same thing, so...we'll just have to see what happens.
With his shot, chemistry with Spezza, and the individual effort he displayed from some of his goals towards the end of the 2010-11 had me expecting big things from him last year, but apparently he had more confidence in himself than I did Came to camp out of shape this year and layed an egg. No room for him (like many others have said) with Stone, Zibenajad, Noesen, Silfverburg etc. all on the way up.

21pts out of 36gms for a guy that came to camp out of shape (really, didn't hear about this at all) isn't half bad. Not really sure about the Sens development with forwards, but I think if he's picked up by another team, maybe it lights a fire under his rear.
I think if he were to join the Pens, become fast friends with guys like Neal, Geno and Sid, he'd pick up some amazing work habits and workout habits (if that's an issue).
I'd rather Shero spent under a 1m on a winger that could pan out than 7.5m on a guy that might have a year or two left under his belt and isn't worth that money at all.

That was his good year when he was playing really well in the AHL and got called up.. which is why we had high expectations for him this year.. but as has been said, he came into this year way out of shape and dropped to 16pts in 56gms and was sitting in the press box half the time.
I think he gets another shot somewhere, the question is which former spezza triggerman will he follow: Patrick Eaves, who worked hard and redefined his role as a 4th line guy, or brandon bochenski, who bounced around as a tweener before packing up for the KHL.
I thought he had a legitimate chance. I still think he might be able to somewhere, but his play away from the puck is balls unfortunately.
He tries hard and gets in the way, but 180-185 lbs isn't a very tough obstacle along the wall for a lot of players.

Eaves always had the tenacity to be a bottom 6-er.
Butler is more of a Bochenski in style. Just a matter of whether he'll catch lightning in a bottle and develop chemistry with a great playmaking center. If he winds up with Thornton, he could have a solid career. If he winds up with Fisher, he's on a plane to Russia next summer.
