Potential Carolina top 6:

Jeff Skinner - Eric Staal - Alex Semin
Jussi Jokinen - Jordan Staal - Tuomo Ruutu

I think it's funny that we, fans of the least talented team in the NHL, are relieved that we didn't sign a superstar, and to a one-year deal, no less.

Bad news for us ... Cam Ward now with, Eric Staal, Jordan Staal, Jeff Skinner, Alex Semin...those are some scary top 4 forwards

I don't think they are necessarily better for signing Semin.

I'm just completely confused by the Leafs taking this as good news. We could have had a big, mega talented potential 40 goal scorer on a risk free 1 year deal.

Instead he goes to a team that will likely be amongst our main competition in reaching the post season this making the task of playoff hockey that much harder.

Insanity.

Who's content with that? Burke doesn't get ripped enough for you?

Why would Washington pass him up?

So with this, they reach the cap floor and sign an offensive threat to slide into their Top 6 to go along with Eric Staal, Jordan Staal, Skinner, Ruutu, Jokinen and now Semin.

Thats a pretty solid Top 6, along with the fact that they have Cam Ward and nearly $12million in cap space still.

This team can really make some noise next season.
Not sure they should be allowed, they've already won a Cup and knocked the Leafs out of the playoffs in the past 10 years.

To rub salt into it they eliminated the Leafs from the playoffs this year.

Burke bends over to pick up chump change on the ground on a regular basis, but when he sees an actual wallet, he keeps walking.

A team that wanted Semin was only willing to commit $7 million to him but he is a huge loss to the Leafs?

Exactly. It's amazing how many people forget that cap space is useless unless you spend it.

After we sign Franson and Scrivens we'll probably have just about $7 million left and people want to use it all on Semin? We were 10th in scoring last year and added JVR, scoring goals was never our problem.

It's a good deal for carolina because they were under the cap floor and don't score a lot of goals.

7th seed Washington loses Semin to the 12th seed Carolina. Seems like a break-even move for the other teams in the East vying for playoffs.

It's a freaking one year deal. What are we going to do with that cap, sign a random superstar halfway through the season?

We'll need it if we trade for Luongo.

DING DING DING!

I have been trying to understand this myself. Why are we so happy he signed with someone else in our conference???

This would have been an easy contract for us to swallow next season, considering there isn't much of anythign left in UFA and we still got $9mil in cap space! One year deal at even $8mil would have been fine, then decide next July what we want to do.

Not to mention we could have easily moved a few contracts for picks at the deadline, if that was needed.

even if we did trade for luongo, we don't need all of the $9mil in cap space currently available.

you can also bet that there will be 3+mil in salary going the other way in any Luongo deal.

That's a helluva "if." Also my new go-to rationalization for the lack of moves we've made this summer
