No, the CHEAP way to get good pitching is to draft a ton of young arms and get lucky. You can get good pitching on the market. The Twins have drafted a ton of pitchers and pretty much all of them had to get TJ surgery and kind of floundered.
As an aside, I wonder how far away we are from just pre-emptive TJ surgery. I wonder if they can open up a relatively healthy pitcher and add a second ligament in there for strength and durability.
I honestly don't think Gardy is necessarily to blame for the team (he has no talent on the pitching staff).
I also am not convinced Anderson is to blame for the bad pitchers (again, no talent to work with). "Pitch to contact" is just another way of saying you don't have talented pitchers. Twins had great pitching when Santana was their ace. Before and after, not so much. I mean, how much can you blame Anderson when his "ace" right now is Scott Diamond?
Why was Morneau on waivers?
He is a major part of the problem in how this team gets built, as he doesn't have any hunger beyond the regular season. His job is done once the regular season is done. Make the playoffs? Mission accomplished, now let's go golfing.
That is the attitude that has brought this team to where it is now. They were winning divisions, so didn't feel the need to make the team better, and now it's come crashing down.
