No it doesn't. There is no cap in baseball. Yes there is a luxery tax but the Pohlad's could afford it. That family is one of the richest in sports (9th richest in baseball according to a CNBC article from April) and could choose to spend like the big boys if they wanted to. They choose not to.

The Twins always have been one of the worst run pro-sports franchises in this country.

That's the problem is the self imposed cap.

Exactly, which goes against what they said they would do once they had a new stadium. Pohlad family has always been full of liars.

Then the problem is as I said, the owners, not Mauer's contract hamstringing the team. Mauer's contract has nothing to do with them not spending money elsewhere to get the players (pitching) we need to be a contender in one of the best markets and stadiums in the majors.

Wow, all of you guys bit on that one.

Good to see the Twins dump Valencia. He's not a major leaguer.

Really sucks to lose Childs for the year or possibly forever. He slipped to the Vikes with injury concerns and they rolled the dice and lost. He could have been a fantastic deep threat. I don't think they stand a chance to win more than four games this year without him and missing Simpson for the first few weeks.

Valencia had a decent bat, but was awful in the field. No lateral quickness whatsoever.

He must have a crap work ethic, because after that first good year he went in the tank. He was under .200 this year.

C'mon son...If that's the case then the Wolves and Que...Vikings are even worse.

The Twins were the epitome of "small market" team to model after the entire last decade. How you consider that one of the worst run franchises is beyond me.

Meh. Pohlads are making money. I don't like it, but a business is a business.

At some point it's the principle of the thing. Taking taxpayer money for a stadium while promising to spend to compete, then backing spending way off after one season because of mismanagement.

Yea, it is pretty pathetic. They did spend a huge chunk of money. We just didn't know it'd all be on one player.

Yes there is. The constant wear and tear on his knees and back. You can't have a guy that tall playing catcher every day. He's also 29 years old, so it's going to be assumed as he grows older, his body isn't going to be as fit as it once was.

It's a chicken and the egg situation. Mauer's contract is bloated and monstrous and creates an issue. It starts with what you do with Mauer.

Well the difference is that this year he is spending time not only catching but playing at first and getting at bats as a DH. He has played a ton of games this season without a single injury and has looked great.

The thing about having him split these three positions, though, is that it reduces his value and therefore makes his contract less sensible. The huge amount of money was given to him because the position he played...and that there are so few catchers that can do what he does. Since he plays less catcher, the contract isn't exactly the best...but he's absolutely doing his best to earn it this season.

He's not playing catcher every day (not even close) so that statement is just incorrect (in regards to this season).

Playing first base really shines the light on his power numbers or lack there of though. The only thing that annoys me to no end with Mauer, he should be hitting more home runs.

Great but what about next season? Mauer really reminds me of Marian Gaborik. All the talent in the world but a frail body that can't keep up with his abilities. You wouldn't give Gaborik a max contract and I wouldn't really give Mauer the max contract.

Not only that but given that Mauer doesn't have a set position that really diminishes his value.

Exactly but you have to figure out what you want to do with Mauer to make his contract worth it but he's not worth as much at 1st base as he is as catcher. That's the problem and that's what a lot of people saw when they saw Minnesota give him his contract.

Dude he lost one year with injuries. He also won multiple awards. Gaborik did neither.
