The Twins HAD to give Mauer that contract or the fans would've burned Target Field down the first year it opened. Not signing Mauer would've been the biggest PR blunder in the history of professional sports.

A bit of hyperbole, but I'm sure you get my point. How could the Twins, on one hand, say they need a new ballpark to generate revenue and sign new players, and other the other hand, not sign the Baby Jesus who just happens to be "one of us"? The stars aligned for Mauer to get that deal.

That being said and a few years down the road, the Twins now go back to being cheapskates.

Excellent Corey Koskie article. He is finally 100% over his concussion and whiplash symptoms.

I remember going through the same thing a few years back and none of the doctors could give me a clear answer, and I looked to him for answers and reassurance (he was trying to make a comeback). Great guy and a happy ending to the story.

Gaborik was in the running for the Rocket...IF he could stay healthy.

Mauer hasn't lost just one year with injuries. He's always been hampered with nagging injuries. And that's going to get worse as he gets older.

The fact is, Mauer is what he is and they'll need to figure out what to do with his contract and where to permanently place him. It'll be stupid to keep him as catcher given his size but because of his contract, there really isn't any place to put him. If they can somehow unload his contract or something, that might be for the best.

BTW; Twins have a really shallow prospect pool. Not terrible but not so great. Not to mention, while their starting pitching isn't so hot, I just don't see a great team there. It might not be a bad idea to simply rebuild, not just retool a weak pitching staff and get a fresh staff in there with their own ideas.

Well, even though the Twins still suck this year, it's nice to know we can still kick Cleveland around. #silverlining

You are WAY off.

Mauer has played fewer than 130 games twice: in 2007 and last year. Last year was really his only serious lost year. Catchers don't play all 162 games. He's not going to be a catcher full time anymore; that's why they brought Doumit in and gave him a longer deal. He's fine at 1B at DH, and occasionally catching games.

Why do they need to move his contract? So they can NOT spend money? There is no reason they aren't spending money to improve this club. They need to spend $20-30M on starting pitching. Move Morneau or Willingham while their value is high for quality prospects and drop the cash on the rotation.

So they move Mauer and with his contract maybe get some meh prospects in return, then go back to spending $60M a year on the roster? Sounds like you're all set to work in the Twins front office.

Also, Gaborik was in the running if healthy?

Here's what the "injury prone" Mauer has accomplished:
- league MVP
- 3x batting champ
- 5x all star
- 3x gold glove
- 4x silver slugger

Here's what Gaborik has accomplished:
- 3x all star
- 2nd team all star

He's won zero individual awards meaning he hasn't been the best player at his position ever in his career, and he's not even been nominated so it's not close. Mauer has won several individual awards for being the best player at his position AND won MVP for being the best player in the league.

Not even close.

Mauer really was my public enemy #1 last season, but that was mostly because of the GIANT contract he just signed and what little information we were being given about his injuries. If I recall, he even had to sit out a game last season because he tweaked his neck looking up for a fly ball in practice. This season though, he bounces back and makes the All-Star team. He's a good player and will be good wherever he plays.

There is no chance that the Twins front office thought that Mauer was going to be a catcher for the rest of his career. He even had injury problems in his rookie season in 2004 that cast doubts on his ability to be a catcher long term. Like Jarick said, that's why we're extending Doumit and putting Mauer in at 1B/DH. Baseball trades are always so iffy too, just look at what we ended up getting for Santana/Delmon/Hardy. Mauer's contract is also not holding the Twins back from spending money. They wouldn't be spending his contract anywhere else if it was off the books. It's the Pohlad's for crying out loud!

Also, Mauer merchandise sells like crazy. Find any kid 12 or under (not to mention the female Twins fan population) with a Twins player shirt/jersey and 9 times out of 10 it says Mauer on the back. Even though they are paying him a hefty price, he's still bringing some back.

Well Revere's 21 game hit streak just ended on a blown call at first base. Really a shame.

And the equivalent of Gold Glove and Silver Slugger in the NHL are what?

I don't think there are really equivalents. Every position in baseball gets a gold glove and a silver slugger every year.

Mauer winning the gold glove means he was the best defensive player at the most defensively taxing position in baseball (catcher)

Mauer winning the silver slugger means he was the best hitter at his position.

DeVries got more rocked than a Hurricane. 8-1 in the second.

Also apparently the Vikes are going with a radio/TV simulcast for their preseason coverage. So those who want it for the Wild, it's starting somewhere.
