Do you think we should trade him if it's likely that he leaves? If so, who would you trade him for and what proposals would you make? What would be your readjusted lineups?

Edit: After next season, would it be smart to trade him?

I guess a better question would be with Lupul.

They should simply have a meeting with him, see if he wants to sign long term, and if he doesn't, move him out. You don't want him to leave for nothing given what we paid to get him, but if sounds like he's not interesting to committing, make a deal.

Don't the Leafs have 2 more seasons of control for Kessel? I figure the Leafs should just trade him to Columbus/Edmonton/Montreal/NYI for say 2 firsts and a second (maybe not MTL).

Edit: actually I wonder if the Leafs could get even more out of columbus, seeing as they just lost a first-line winger and Scott Howsden(SP?) is -- judging by the deal he got for Nash -- not the best at negotiating in his favour.

Actually, Kessel has a NTC kicking in for the last year of his contract. I would ask his agent about his intentions of re-signing. If I thought there was a chance he walks for nothing, I'd trade him. After what we gave up to get him we have to get something back.

I suspect Burke, knowing all this, will give him anything he wants.

Yeah it was a disappointment when Sundin didn't get traded and instead left the leafs with them getting nothing.

As he should

With all of these players signing 14 year deals you're never going to get another sniper in their prime years

I get the feeling after his contract expires he will be playing the opposite wing to Parise

Why not play close to home in a market that will love you for being a hometown boy and won't try to interview you while you are in the bathroom.

Kessel and Parise are very close friends.

Given the dynasty signings by the Wild in the Hockey mad town. I would not be shocked if Kessel wanted to go there in FA in 2 seasons...

Burke needs to get him signed for a long term or workout a deal that works for the Leafs and not draft picks from a team. Were not in forever rebuild mode..

What would fair value be for Kessel?

Benn + top prospect in Dallas?
Getzlaf + 1st? Yes Kessel is worth more than Getzlaf
Oshie + Stewart ST Loius?

I like to think he will stay and be a Leaf for a long time. A lot of players really like living in Toronto not to mention no market offers more endorsemnt potential. I remember when Wendel got traded to Colorado he said it cost him 6 mil+ in endorsements, which was more than his salery.

Since he has never once indicated he wants to be anywhere else I see no reason to get all negative or worried.

If this team is out of the playoffs again, he should take a hike.

this team needs a core change if we are missing the playoffs for 8 years straight with nothing to show.

I think that Anaheim would have to give a little more since Getzlaf is a UFA next off-season and there is a chance he might not re-sign. perhaps if a 2nd was added to the deal, with a 3rd coming from the Leafs it would be more fair.

I may be in the minority but I'd like him to be traded regardless of his intentions.

hes not going anywhere.

the same way burke locked up grabs, resigned kulemin, reimer, etc, etc the same will be done with kessel.

i would feel better if there was something in the new cba which limited the outrageous cap circumventing contracts. id be fine offering kessel the length max x a reasonable amount across the board. as an example something like $7 million x 7 years

I'm not sure about that.

Lebron Parise is a force to be reckoned with.

I think he stays. He's got friends here too and the team is coming together and I have no doubt that the organization treats Kessel VERY well.

I say he will stay, if we can get some momentum and start making the playoffs, he will want to be a part of the madness that is Toronto at playoff time. Although I almost forget what that feels like.

What reason would Kessel want to leave the Leafs, besides the complete nonsense that comes from some Leaf fans? Kessel is under contract (I believe) for two more years. Must be a slow day, lots of hockey to come before he becomes a UFA; chicken little is out in full force.
