Why Henrik Tallinder Is Better Than You Think

Peter DeBoer calls him a top two defenseman on our team, and Lou Lams says much of the same. So why does NJ's top brass like Tallinder?

http://www.behindthenet.ca/nhl_stati...4+45+46+63+67#

Tallinder consistently goes up against the toughs, starts in his own end more than our other defenseman, and is a positive possession player. That's a very difficult trifecta to achieve.

Ranking among NJ Devils defensemen with at least 30gp:
2010-2011:
Corsi Rel: 1st
QualComp: 2nd
D Zone Starts: 2nd

2011-2012:
Corsi Rel: 2nd
QualComp: 2nd
D Zone Starts: 1st

Then there's a statistic called PDO, which sums on-ice save percentage and shooting percentage at even strength when a given player is on the ice. Average is 100% (8% shooting, 92% save), with a number above 100 indicating that a player is getting fortunate puck luck and vice versa. Players regress heavily towards 100 over a large enough sample. Tallinder was last among NJ defensemen in PDO in 11-12 at 964 (remember that he didn't play in the second half, when the team as a whole was a lot better), and was 4th in 10-11 at 974 (a lot of Devils had really bad PDOs in 10-11). His PDOs in Buffalo? 1015, 997, and 1006 his last three years there. I, for one, don't think Tallinder suddenly lost any and all ability to prevent goals from being scored when he came to NJ, considering he's been our best possession defenseman the last two years (and especially consider that PDO is a very random statistic). The more likely scenario is that he's gotten some bad puck luck and was injured at the wrong time.

"But all I need to do is watch the game, dude!" Well, if you knew that Tallinder starts more than our other defensemen in the defensive zone, and that he faces the toughest competition, and that he's our best defenseman in shot differential, all from simply watching the game, bravo, you're a savant. But I suspect 99% of the game watching population didn't realize that off hand.

Even if you hate statistics, the above points should have relevance. They're not stats for the sake of stats - they reveal something. Tallinder is put in a tougher situation than most of our other defenseman and manages to come out on top possession wise. Perhaps Lou and Pete know what they're talking about when they refer to him as a top two defenseman.

Tallinder-Zidlicky are 2 top 2 defensemen.

Tallinder-Zidlicky
Greene-Larsson
Salvador-Volchenkov
Harrold

Fayne-IR

Sign a forward and start the year. Or wait for the lockout, trade a D for a forward, and enjoy the snow.

I'm still amazed at how good he looked in the Finals, having not played in months.

Our defense is finally solid again, and I'm interested to see how Tallinder will fare over (hopefully) a full, healthy season.

I still like Tallinder. But his inconsistency is quite annoying. Still he's a good guy to have on your team.

When Tallinder was at his best he was down right dominant. At he actually has a slap shot unlike all our Dmen apart from Zidz.

I thought he would be much rustier than he was, but he quickly allayed my fears. Presumably he will be just as good, if not better, next season.

Tallinder was terrible before going down. It was actually frightening how bad he was.

I'd trade him for Matt Cullen. Seriously though, I wish he were more assertive with the puck and on the rush. He plays a very soft game for a man his size.

With our log-jam, I'd look into moving him for a 40-50pt forward.

Matt Cullen is with the 2013 Stanley Cup Champion/Presidents Trophy/Northwest Division winning/Western Conference top seed Minnesota Wild! He don't wanna come to the team he captain defected from! He wants to win!

I'm the one who started all the controversy about not liking Tallinder, but I'm not gonna go that far.

Like I said he was our best D man under Lemaire. Wasn't impressed under Deboer for the most part.

Don't forget. He struggled with pain in his leg a while before the blood clot was discovered. It explains much of his struggles at that time.

Actually, this thread just proves my opinion of Tallinder...

Good use of stats though, if not a bit overwhelming.

He was awful under MacLean, but I give him a free pass because everyone was terrible. He was good under Lemaire so I gave him a clean slate this year.

He had a good three days in the Cup finals but before hs blood clot, he was straight garbage. He's a good size D-man but never uses it. Just gets out worked along the boards and in the crease. He's mobile, but he's not particularly quick. His shot is good but it's inconsistent and not deflectable because his shot gets away from him up high sometimes.

I really hope we move this guy this offseason. We don't need him to be mentored by Larsson anymore.

There's a word for people who are dying to move Tallinder.

And that word is "stupid".

You're right.

It will be much better to keep scratching our 19 year old top prospect until someone gets hurt.

Well someone has to be moved. Carrying eight defencemen is wasting somebody's time and talent.

tally is good, but of the two d-men likely to be traded (sal and harrold just re-signed, volch has a nmc, zid was just traded for, and larsson isn't going anywhere) he is the more valuable of the two, i think, which is why it would better to trade him.

let's be honest, one of he or greene is moving soon, it would be stupid to have larsson sitting.

Hey I wouldn't be opposed to moving Volchenkov instead of Tallinder, but Volch is signed for four years, at more money than Tallinder AND he has a NTC to boot. Besides, I'd rather give Volch one more chance to see if Stevens can get the player out of him he used to be in Ottawa, especially with the lack of physicality on our D.

Someone has to move though and Tallinder's the most logical candidate. Especially since they didn't exactly need him in the playoffs last year until late when amazingly he did look like the best guy out there. Of course he had fresh legs and the guys he was playing with and against didn't.

I think it will be decided in training camp. Moving either of them now doesn't make too much sense.
