Same as many are saying, depends on who and how much we add. Also, it also depends on what position we're drafting at and the ranking of the top centres, i.e. if Monahan's still there by the time we draft, you don't include the pick in a package unless a guy like Tavares or Stamkos is coming back. It's overpayment, but that's what it'll take.
I would do it, why not if you are confident you wil be outside the top ten. We got 1st round picks this year in Finn And Morgan. We have Kadri, Colborne, Ashton, Biggs, Percy, Rielly, Finn who are all first round or at least quality. Kulemin suposedly could get us a first and apparently Mac could have if memory serves. Not really concerned about this years first, we are in good shape overall except TENDING, so forget the C, get the G!
We only gave away the likes of Niedermayer,Luongo,Rask,Seguin,Hamilton. It so sad that some don't have the brain cells to see how trading away our firsts has never worked for us. Even down to us dumping picks for over the hill vets to (not finish last)not give up Lindros.I can' think of one time we traded our first and gained. If we had just kept them,we wouldn't be 8 years and counting. I guess foresight takes a certain IQ level.
Would I risk it ,with this team? Depends who it is,but for Statsny,no!

A draft pick does not translate into NHL superstar. You forget aquisitions along the way, colborne, ashton, gardiner, franson. Detroit doesnt build that way? If you are smart about it, you can move players around and come out ahead, the marlies are rebuilt already with more guys coming down the pipe. Burke is giving the team a solid foundation and future. Dont forget some of our older guys could net picks and picks can be combined to move up if needed. Working with the assumption the leafs should place between 10 - 30th will you be losing a blue chip pick?
I think Burke will make some moves this year and do all he can to increase the value or at least INTEREST in Komi, Lombardi, Steckel, Connolly, Bozak, Reimer, Scrivens, Kulemin, Mac and maybe Franson.
As people said, depends who, but I still do not feel confortable with a trade like this until next year. One more lottery pick would help assure we have amazing building blocks down the road, making the 2014 first "expendable".
No, we keep our first. We a more likely to end up with a lottery pick in a deep draft then getting in to the playoffs and if we move our 1st for a #1 C then we would have to add pieces to the deal meaning we gain more by keeping the pick and drafting our own. This is what Burke should have done when he went all in on Kessel. And even do a #1 C beats a #1 RW I still think we should keep the pick.

You know what might be a fun exercise? Seeing what kind of roster teams could have put together with ONLY their draft picks over, say, the past fifteen years.
