Yeah that 3.5 million 4th line centre is really helping them more than Phaneuf ever did.

Phaneuf is among the top in the league in many categories and then the leafs in general don't have anyone close in others. Phaneuf is good and his best days (point wise anyways) came in Calgary when there was other good defensemen with him and he wasn't relied on as much. Who knows what Phaneuf may be capable of in a few years with Gardiner/Rielly developing more and being able to take some of the heat off of him.
If Dion was UFA this summer he'd have signed a larger deal than Suter.

Agreed and it will be well deserved. For those who think he will take a paycut think again, nor should he have to. Dion plays top minutes and always against the other teams best players and will continue to produce 40-50 pts, is Captain of the Leafs and despite what a few Burke haters on here think, is a respected voice in the locker room, my in the know guys told me so (see how stupid that sounds guys?)

Fair enough. Burke seems to like limiting contracts to 5 years so I assume Phaneuf would get that length. And instead of guessing a dollar amount I will say his cap hit will be about 9-10% of the salary cap.
