The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has signed defenseman Jordie Benn to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2012-13 campaign.
Benn, 24, earned an assist in his NHL debut last season, becoming the 10th player in Dallas Stars history to record his first NHL point in his first NHL game. Along with younger brother Jamie, they became the third set of siblings in Dallas Stars history, and the sixth in team annals, to play in an NHL contest together. In total, Benn collected two assists in three games with Dallas in 2011-12.
Thing I like about JoBenn is he improves (numbers anyway) every year in every league he claws his way into. And he seemed to blend ok in his few games up last year. I hope to hear good things about him this year again.
I like him, but I doubt he's ever more than a #6 at best.
You're probably right. I'd give him a go in the 6 spot or maybe the number 7 guy as a situational utility type if he can somehow earn it and serve him up some PP time. The only reason I say a shot on the PP is that he seems to have the awareness to make the right play at least from the little I've seen of him, and 9 goals, 32 points in the AHL from the point is nothing to sneeze at.
But what do you get out of him in the playoffs when he's taking an endless parade of hits from 3rd and 4th liners? Tough to say if JoBenn even gets the chance with the amount of big body prospects and Fistrics and Romes. I would like to see him earn it, but like last year it would seem it will have to be an injury scenario realistically to even get the call.
