Nick Bjugstad

Note: This is a hypothetical discussion on a board dedicated to hypotheticals. I realize that there is very little chance Nick is moved, but let's all have a little suspension of disbelief, mkay?

I've always been a Bjugstad fan, and it would be hard not to be after his previous season in the NCAA, averaging more than a point-per-game. His size (6'5" 215lbs), skill (42 points in 40 games for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers) and ability to play in all situations is tantalizing, especially for a Leafs team that's sorely lacking in all three departments from its centre contingent. But with Weiss and eventually Jonathan Huberdeau slotting into the two top 6 centre positions, could a more pressing organizational need be met by moving Bjugstad? If so, in what neighbourhood would the return be in? Could any of those pieces be acquired from Toronto?

That was written to Florida fans, not by one

Panthers need scoring. Bjugstad fits that role perfectly. It would have to be a young scorer coming back which kind of defeats the purpose because Bjugstad would probably be better than said play physically as well.

So probably Kadri would get it done but honestly I'd still take Bjugstad

I'm a minority, but as a blues fan I offer Tarasenko straight up. I think Bjugstad is the real deal.

would love for the leafs to get Bjugstad, not sure what panthers would want in return or their needs... also not sure if leafs would have the assets necessary to acquire him

Understood. If it's scoring the Panthers need, I'd be willing to offer up Kadri+ to get it done. I think Bjugstad's scoring upside rivals Kadri's, but the Leafs need a physical two way centre more than a pure offense winger, and I really think Bjugstad fits the bill.

Rather have Bjudstad then Kadri. I think he has a much higher ceiling.

We need a two way physical Center so it all makes zeo sense to trade him. Unless that + for Kadri is something crazy like 2 number 1 picks.

Haha, makes sense. I guess I'm just wondering where he slots in for you guys with Huberdeau and Weiss in the top 6. Does Huberdeau move to wing? Because it seems to me that moving Nick to wing would be a waste of his skillset.

Jugs is going to be a center for the Panthers, no doubt about that. If anything, they will use Huberdeau as a winger, but they could go with a Bjugstad and Huberdeau as their top two centers in the future. Regardless, Tallon will not move Jugs, unless its for an massive overpayment. He has showed a big improvement since we drafted him, and could be a Chara at center when he hits his prime (meaning the kid is already almost 6-6).

Hahaha, trust me, I know the kid's a monster, which is part of the reason I'm so interested in him. He's really made some impressive strides since he's been drafted, and I know that those are the kinds of guys you just don't trade away, but theoretically speaking, what could reasonably get it done from Toronto? You'll have to forgive me for not being intimately acquainted with the Panthers' organizational needs, but to me it seems like there's a bit of a drop-off after Campbell, Jovo, and Kulikov in your top 4. I'm aware that Gudbranson is on his way up, but Jovo and Kuba aren't getting any younger, and personally I'm not sure if Gudbranson's ready to handle an expanded role. To that extent, would something around Gardiner be a little more palatable?

Panthers need scoring and severely need a top line center, and IMO Tallon thinks it'll be Jugs. He's not attempted to bring in a player who can play center in the top 6. I think Hubey will be on the wing. May try him 2nd like center to start, though. We'll see.

So, it'd take a comparable player to get him from us, and we have enough back end help right now.

LOL, a young, elite goal scorer in the NHL is worth more than an unproven prospect. Bjugstad is good, but he's not Nugent Hopkins or something. Think Bjugstad + 1st and maybe even more if you want Kessel.

And this is coming from a Wings fan who hates the Leafs

As a Blues fan, I'd open up the conversation with Ty Rattie. Then I'd consider adding another pick or prospect, maybe a less essential roster player such as Matt D'agostini or Ryan Reaves. I really like Rattie but Bjugstad is awesome.

I would not be against moving Schneider for a really good prospect and player.

Bjugstad and Soupy
Schneider, Tanev, Gaunce, and a 1st
