I've always been a Bjugstad fan, and it would be hard not to be after his previous season in the NCAA, averaging more than a point-per-game. His size (6'5" 215lbs), skill (42 points in 40 games for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers) and ability to play in all situations is tantalizing, especially for a Leafs team that's sorely lacking in all three departments from its centre contingent. But with Weiss and eventually Jonathan Huberdeau slotting into the two top 6 centre positions, could a more pressing organizational need be met by moving Bjugstad? If so, in what neighbourhood would the return be in? Could any of those pieces be acquired from Toronto?
Hubs will play left wing.

Hopefully Jugs fills in the top or second line center next year.

Kesler, Luongo, Edler for Kulikov, Huberdeau, Bjusgstad, 1st.

HYPOTHETICALS FTW.

I think the op is asking purely from a value standpoint. I believe he understands that fit-wise and positionally, Big B is the exact thing you need so it makes no sense for you to move him, and he understands that it makes little sense for you to move him anyways. But I think what he's asking is hypothetically, purely from a value perspective, what type of return would it entail?

Because surely something could get it done, value-wise, whether it's Gardiner + 1st, or Kessel + Rielly, there must be something.

My uneducated guess, as someone that's liked Bjugstad for quite a while now and thinks he has tremendous potential;

Gardiner/Rielly + Kadri

btw is he actually almost 6'6? He's usually listed at 6'4 iirc

To the op, Drew Shore is probably a more realistic and cost effective option.

Bjugstad is being a little overrated IMO, when fans are hoping for his to be a top 6 center as soon as next season i think a let down may be soon coming. That's not to say that isn't a reasonable projection either, just that it's probably 3 years away at least. Look at how long it took David Backes, a comparable size+scoring match, to be an effective top 6 center. Not only did he start on the wing in the NHL, he played one more year in college than Bjugstad has as well as part of his first pro year in the AHL where he scored all of 13 points in 31 games. Kesler is another decent comp. just off the top of my head. The road to being a top 6 center will be longer and harder than many on here are expecting. In saying that he's a wonderful prospect.

Yeah, I think I remember reading somewhere that Huberdeau's played wing before. Makes sense. And the guy's like 6'5, why isn't his name "Big Jugs" yet?

I thought that Bjugstad was over hyped until recently. Jugs dominated our 2012 development camp looking like the best player on the ice among a very talented group of prospects, including Huberdeau. Tallon was gushing about him noting in passing that he expects him to fill out to around 240 pounds.

I would have a hard time seeing the Panthers trading Jugs given that the team is in the midst of a rebuild.

With all due respect to Panthers fans, I don't think Bjustad is gonna just slide right into top six. I would be surprised if he manages to catch on getting consistent top six minutes. He's good, but he's gonna have kind of like a Ryan Johanson learning curve.

I do not think that most of us in Pantherland are suggesting he is ready for a top 6 role. In fact, he is returning to college and will not be available until the 2013-14 season.

What I and my fellow Panther fans see is a 19 year old who is 6"6" 215 pounds, who protects the puck well, has an excellent shot, seems to have good(not great) hands and vision, but who needs to continue to improve his skating. We also understand that he has a strong work ethic and seems to have his head on straight.

I am not saying that he is a cannot miss prospect. But, he still has a huge upside and might become a 6'6' 240 pound beast.

I personally don't think so. Prospects usually have an easier time transitioning from the NCAA than the WHL. That said, I do agree that it's quite a challenge to crack the top 6 right off the bat. If I'm Florida, I want to have him playing sheltered minutes on a 3rd line scoring line. Let him learn the ropes against weaker competition and gain some confidence before breaking him into the top 6.

You know, the Leafs have a former Olympian as their new skating coach haha.

Is that confirmed? Bummer if so, I was hoping to see him in the league this year.

Why would the Panthers trade possibly the next coming of Joe Thornton? We already missed out on that guy once (Thanks Mike Keenan).

Sadly, as a Gophers fan, he plays like he's 5'6". No physicality in his game at this time.

Not from what I saw at rookie camp.

I've said it since the dawn of time, comparing him to Getzlaf. Reminds me of his game so much. He's not going anywhere.

Again, I realize there's a very small chance he's moved. I put a little note in the OP that I recognized that. I'm interested in his inherent value, which is why this is a "value of" thread and not a proposal. Think of it like an "IF Bjugstad were traded, what would the return be?" That's the point of this thread.

Haha. Love all the responses so far.
The guy isn't being traded. We have no incentive to move him.

Yea, really. If we were to move him it would be a deal around a guy like Kessel, ie a damn good player. Not straight up; but he is the only player on Toronto that I would trade one of our top prospects for. Everyone else, meh.

Great player. Hopefully he pans out, needs to gain more offensive instincts if being compared to Getzlaf and Backes.

Watch a lot of Gopher games, pretty good prospect, love the size.
