Small Jankowski Update

Some tweets from @THsportsfeed

"According to @Fighting_Saints coach Jim Montgomery, Calgary Flames first-round draft pick Mark Jankowski will play at Providence this year."

"Jankowski attended the Flames prospect camp earlier this month along with a handful of Providence recruits, who helped sway him to school."

"The original plan called for Jankowski to spend a year in Dubuque to develop before heading to Providence College."

Thoughts on how he'll do?

Well he'll be playing against much tougher competition, so we'll get a better read on him.

The negatives is that he won't play an NHL game for at least 4 years. Plus he can find that loophole and become a UFA.

I am mixed on this, I'm a little concerned he might be rushing this a bit, but if he is as good as Weisbrod and company say he is, he should be able to handle this.

Don't see him finding that loophole due to the fact the organization has so much behind him when they drafted him as early as they did. That's gotta give the kid confidence, and a sort or allegiance to the flames. Though will that loophole change in the new CBA?

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, with him heading to the NCAA, the loophole is eliminated.

If he had gone to Dubuque, he actually would have had the opportunity to pull a Schultz (if the new CBA doesn't fix this, which I imagine it will).

So, now with him going to Providence, we need not worry about him ditching us.

Also, he can leave college and sign an ELC with the Flames any time he wants. He doesn't have to complete all 4 years. Though I do imagine unless he shows great progress, he'll be there for at least 3 years.

Very interesting. He will either do well and a lot of people will be eating crow, or he will get absolutely crushed.

I do think there is middle ground here.

At the same time, the jump from last season to college is so big that I won't be surprised if he suffers a bit when he's adjusting. If he does rip it up, that will be the best of signs.

Agree for the fact that his first year there he could struggle against the tougher competition and will need time to adjust. I wouldn't put expectations on him just yet.

I think he's bonded really well with Jon Gillis with tweeting back and forth and I think that was a big factor being Flames draftees themselves

Kinda iffy about this, hope it all works out and he destroys NCAA!

He's not making it in the NHL right away? Yakupov would make it. "Best player in the draft" my ass. Feaster.

Jamie Benn didn't make the NHL right away but he is still the best player in his draft (or 2nd depending on how you view P.Kane) you clearly have an agenda.

On topic I am glad he is going to the NCAA, I think it will be good for him to go to a team where he won't have to be "the guy" right away so he can focus on his defensive game.

Yes, because Yakupov was available with the 14th pick.

What do you mean by that? If anything this decision may possibly speed up his timeline to the NHL level.

Fingers crossed this knocks a year of of the 10 year plan.

I hope he shows that high school competition wasn't only that, I hope he makes me eat crow, I hope he has a solid first year (might take a year), but mostly I hope this speeds up his development (while still providing correct development).
