I think this is the third straight summer that Zenon Konopka has been a UFA without a mention from the Canes. Given that his resume -- great at faceoffs, willing to mix it up with anyone, able to play a little, good teammate, earns under $1 million/per year, weighs in at about 210 -- pretty much matches up exactly with what we say we need, I must say I'm surprised.

Also given that the Wild will be his sixth NHL team, it's possible it's just not our turn to have him yet. I predict that we will. Someday.

Moving on to actual possibilities, I like the idea of getting toughness from the defense. But unless we're willing to trade a guy like McBain or Pitkanen, it's just not gonna happen. It's going to have to be the prototypical fourth-line type. Thank heaven Maurice isn't here anymore or it would almost certainly end up being Rosehill.

There's got to be a reason Blanchard hasn't gotten a shot and isn't being mentioned, even when he fits a need. Any ideas?

I honestly have no clue where they're going to go with this. Everything so far this offseason has surprised me, though, so this should be no different.

Konopka would be a great addition to this team! He is like a better all around Tommy K.

Blanchard is pretty much another Tim Conboy from what I've seen. So/so minor leaguer, can't fight for ****.

I always wanted MacIntyre for his somewhat local connections.

I don't think a traditional enforcer is needed either, but Brad Winchester would be a good guy to have on the fourth line. Great size, decent wheels, can actually play the game a little but is not afraid to throw down.

I remember an article that had the organization talking Blanchard up and how he will get a good long look at camp/preseason. I'll try to find it.

I think the fact that we have eleven billion 4th line players and JR is still saying he wants to sign someone else would indicate that Blanchard is not in the plans.

The only guy in FA I'd want for enforcing is Dom Moore. Otherwise, why add more? Anyways here's Blanchard dancing with Jackman (and I mean dancing literally)

Here's an actually entertaining fight by Blanchard

Steve SmackIntyre would be awesome, if he had a 2 Way. With his ECHL Checkers connection, he was well loved in Charlotte.

Unfortunately he's with Pittsburgh for the next two years unless he were claimed off waivers...

Jared Boll? Dude's from Charlotte, and he can actually play, unlike a lot of these people that are being mentioned.

Though, in fairness, Steve MacIntyre did do this:

Or, another good option would be this guy to be our 4th line enforcer. Didn't catch his name, but man, what a right cross he's got

Well, only because it was Matt Cooke, and he was being a little ***** before he got knocked the **** out. Boulerice's was more comical, for sure.

Boll is under contract for another two years with Columbus, but could be a great option as a UFA. He will command more money than others however, but he will fight ANYBODY, and I mean anybody:

There are guys out there who can easily be grabbed at 1-year, 2-way, league-minimum offers that can provide significant regular season toughness, particularly against the Bruins and the Atlantic Division.

However, if you're really looking for a skilled guy, Jim Vandermeer would surely come here on a cheap 1-way and can fight anyone, and play D or wing.

This. He has been in the system for a long long long time. Perhaps he deserves a chance to at least show what he has to offer at the NHL level.

I long for the days when we'd while away the summer with thread after thread debating the Canes backup goalie position, and not the potential signing of a thug.

He is a heart and soul player for the Checkers. When he went down (along with Soryal) the team really started dropping out bad. Other then having no one able to drop the gloves with any real result. The really just didn't care that much.

Nicolas Blanchard has been in 44 fights since the start of the 2009-2010 season. He's definitely a gamer for sure. Had a few nice fights last season.
