Excellent video 99 problems, liked it a lot but too bad the translation wasn't complete.

Komova was always smiling except when making mistakes on her exercises, Mustafina looked much more shy. Barring injuries, I can see Komova continuing till Rio, not so sure about Alya though, she already went through a lot and age doesn't help either, two more years look more likely.

The American way was "must-AA-fin-a" with emphasis on the "A" instead of the "I" which is closer to the way the Russians say it. But I think that may just be because the Russians say it quickly, and in this language letters are often lost when they speak quickly, I'm sure if they said it slowly it would sound closer to the British way.

Now you mention it I guess I will post one of the videos I watched. It's really interesting, especially the part where the reporter asks the coach "do they often cry?" I find it fascinating, they are unlike any other athlete with the emotions they show.

I heard some Russian announcers pronounce it "Moo-staf-in-nah"

But like you mentioned, when you go from one language to another, it is hard to know what the real pronunciation is. Sometimes they just don't translate into English because the name has a sound that others are not used to, which you can find plenty examples of in hockey. Sometimes you have to wait until you hear the person themselves say their name to truly know how it sounds

I'm sure Vika will be back to claim what she rightfully deserves; gold in the all around. I hope they will both be back and I am a big fan of Paseka so hopefully she will come back too.

Glad you guys liked the video

It's a shame, if I wasn't in America for the 2nd week of the Olympics I would have tried to get tickets for one of the finals

I'm really interested to see China in Rio to be honest with you. I think there top gymnasts are getting older.

4/5 of the team in London were (supposedly) 20 years old

They have a deep pool, but they have always struggled to find a legit talent for the All Around since Huilan Mo (Atlanta 96, finished fourth, but was a contender until a final mistake), also because they totally lack artistic skills. Losing apparatus specialists like Lu Sui for the beam and He Kexin on the bars won't be easy for them either.
Usually you can start to understand how strong a nation will be in the Olympics starting from the World Championships of the year before (so 2015).

China seems to be very structural, not a surprise. They need more emotion.

I still don't understand why they always go on about her being black though, I get that it's America and everyone tries too hard to be politically correct, but it would do more good to just not mention it at all. If she was white and got bullied during her earlier years then this article probably would not even exist. Personally I don't give a **** that she's black, it doesn't make a difference to me whatsoever, she is just one amongst a group of great gymnasts.

Same for me, but it sounds like that particular gym where she started was crap, not others. Also, most of the times, less talented gymnasts tend to treat better fellow gymnasts like crap or isolate them out of pure jealousy; not uncommon, especially among girls.

Yeah, bullying happens all the time. Like I said, this only gets an article because she's black.

10 says she'll quit gymnastics to chase fame, ending up an alcoholic and/or crackhead like Lindsay Lohan.

Any takers?

We'll be talking about her in the entertainment section soon. She said she wants Rio but her actions say LA!!!

But yeah. I bet this thread will be active at least until the VMAs next week.

I think she will try acting like Nastia and failing that she will try singing like Carly Patterson. I don't want to think about the outcome though...

At the end of the day, she is what, a 16 year old girl? I mean, she worked her ass of for years and represented her country very well on the world stage. I hope she has a good family and stays grounded. I don't mind her enjoying this bit of fame and all for a few weeks/months. I hope it works out for her in the end.

That's the key. We'll see.

Jordyn Weiber has been very quiet, but I think after next year she'll retire.

Yeah, as critical as I am, I think it's good that she's thinking about her future outside of gymnastics sooner rather than later. As we all know, you can't carve out a long lasting career in this sport and make enough money to be set for life, all these girls need to find something to do afterwards.

McKayla should do whatever she can to cash in. There's no money in Gymnastics itself, but there's a decent bit of money to be made for American Olympians in the world of endorsements and public appearances. Nastia and Shawn Johnson both made out pretty well, as have other American Olympians.

Although I'd like to see her back in Rio, her comments regarding 2016 have been pretty unenthusiastic. I don't blame her though, she doesn't really have anything to prove and it's a massive commitment.
